In recent weeks, numerous Windows 11 users have reported issues with Google Chrome being blocked or crashing unexpectedly. Investigations reveal that these problems are linked to Microsoft's Family Safety feature, a suite of parental control tools designed to filter inappropriate content and manage screen time. When enabled, Family Safety restricts access to non-Microsoft browsers, including Chrome, to ensure that content filters and other parental controls are not bypassed. This behavior aligns with Microsoft's documentation, which states that "other commonly used browsers will be blocked" to maintain control over content access. (support.microsoft.com)
However, users have encountered issues where the expected prompt allowing them to request permission to use Chrome fails to appear, leading to confusion and frustration. While Microsoft has previously faced criticism for promoting its Edge browser through various methods, experts argue that this scenario is different. Blocking third-party browsers in this context is a deliberate feature of the Family Safety software, intended to enforce security objectives. (windowscentral.com)
To address this issue, users can disable the "Filter inappropriate websites" setting under the Edge tab in the Family Safety app or web portal. Alternatively, they can navigate to the Windows tab, select Apps & Games, and unblock Chrome from there. It's important to note that while these workarounds restore access to Chrome, they may also reduce overall internet safety by disabling certain protection measures. (laptopmag.com)
As of now, Microsoft has not released an official patch to resolve this issue. Users are advised to implement the suggested workarounds and stay informed about any updates from Microsoft regarding this matter.
