Windows 10 how would I install Win10 on a different SSD

My friend is getting a second ssd with higher capacity and I'd like to install windows 10 on it (he's on win7)

If I recall correctly the install process automatically installs on the same drive and doesn't ask you which drive you want to install on.

So is my only option to install win10 on a bootable drive and boot from it through the bios? I wanted to avoid that cause none of us have a small usb drive over 8gb(only 1tb external hdd) (unless the full os doesnt get installed and you think 8gb is fine?)

which leads to another questions, can you use that external HDD as a bootable even if it has other stuff on it?

anyway sorry for all the questions. basically what would be the best way for me to go about doing that?

Usually the mfg of the drive has a cloning utility to copy the entire old drive to a new one. You should then be able to do the win10 upgrade.
Or do the upgrade to the old drive than use the utility to clone the old drive to the new one.
