Hi

Do you know what your Windows Serial Number is?
If you don't install Belarc Adviser and it will display all of the serial numbers for all of your software.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Copy the number and save it to a location not on your C:\ drive, and print it out.

Down load a legitimate copy of the same version of Windows that you have installed.

Use ImgBurn to copy the ISO file to a DVD to make a bootable install disk.

Boot your computer to the disk and do an install of Windows.

I hope this helps, you will need the registration number during the process.

Is The Registration Key The Product Key?
And Will This Work If I Format?

Thanks,

Hmm, there is a problem. Every PC with Windows MUST have a COA sticker. Boxes without that sticker are actually not legal and should never have been sold.

You better check with Microsoft whether that key which Jelly Bean found is legal. Without the COA sticker you are flying in the dark.

Hi

Since it had Windows installed (and I assume authenticated at some point) the registered number should be correct for the computer.

You should check to see if the number you have is legit, and authenticated.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/how-can-i-tell-if-windows-7-is-activated

Do you remember if you went through the authentication process when you first got the computer?
If you didn't then the computer may still be registered to a previous owner.

In the end you may have to buy a copy of Windows 7 to get a legitimate installation.

What have you done to get rid of the virus?
Have you run Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware?

How is it taking up space on your hard drive?

You could try and do a repair install of Windows 7 and see if it get's rid of the problem.
That can be done starting within Windows.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

The way I have done it in the past is to create a new User, and reboot to that user.
Next, open msconfig (type it in the run window), and set it to diagnostic setup and reboot to the new user account again.

This will load Windows with only the basics and no data from the previous install.
Now start the install process as described above from within that user account.

It will give you essentially a clean install of Windows with no hold overs from the earlier install.

But do make sure that your Windows COA is authentic before you do this, because it will want you to authenticate when you get done.

Hi

Is the product ID you see on this screen that same as the one you got using the key finder software?
I'd assume that this is the correct one and was installed when the computer was originally built.

You should be able to do the reinstall or repair install using this number, as far as I know.
Maybe someone else can confirm this?

I don't know why it would show a different number here then what was used to verify it to start with.

Judging from the account name "Home PC" it hasn't been set up by anyone else for a personal account.

I'd still like to know what kind of virus you think you have and how it's using up disk space.

That's not the usual complaint about viruses.

I still think it may be better to fix the problem then to do a complete reinstall.

I still recommend that you download and run, Belarc Adviser, it will tell you everything about your computer including the registration number for both Windows and Office plus any other software on the computer.

The Produce ID is not the product key and is useless for activation.

He's right the product key is a special authentication that is given to manufacturers.

To reinstall you will have to have the Windows license key that you would normally get on a tag on the computer or on the Windows disk package.

Check Belarc Adviser and see what number it shows.

It will be in the Software Licenses section, labeled Windows 7 etc. Key (xxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxx etc).

Compare it with the one you got with the key finder program, if they are the same it should be safe to go ahead.

If you have a legitimate Windows, you can always get a new copy from Microsoft. In downloadable versions, you can download 20 times. Just go ahead.

Has anyone considered the possibility of a hidden partition with the recovery DVDs in it? Many mfrs provide that now instead of physical disks. The BIOS should have a method of accessing them if present. If they are there, then the product key isn't necessary. Just make new disks and load them after either changing the hard disk or stripping it. Check with the original mfrs web site for instructions and advice.

If you bring up Disk Management [right-click My Computer, select Manage, select Disk Management] it should show at least two partitions for the boot drive. They will be "System Reserved" (100MB) and the Windows partition. If a hidden partition is there it may show also. If so it will be at least 3GB, possibly more. Failing that, use a utility such as Parted Magic (make and boot on the DVD) to look at the drive. BE CAREFUL! PM can destroy the disk if you're not cautious. Just look at it. It will show all of the partitions on all of the disks. This will be under Linux, so the first disk will be sda, and the first partition will be sda1, etc. If you find that the disk has the hidden partition, then go back to the mfr for instructions, or the BIOS Setup screen to access it and make recovery disks from it.

I ran Belarc on my machine and found that it DOES NOT show any hidden partitions, including "System Reserved", so it won't be useful for this exercise.

Thanks,

This is a good article, but turn your sound volume down before you click on it. An ad comes on automatically, at full volume (I HATE THAT!). The instructions given are excellent. Belarc will also provide the product key for the installed Windows, and will identify the edition. MS Office 2007 can be downloaded from Microsoft as an iso file. Be sure you know which version, and that you get the key from Belarc. If you're not married to Office you might consider Open Office or Libre Office as good, compatible substitutes.
