Windows 7 Long Term Chronic Seemling Random BSOD Problem

So, after reviewing countless forum posts over the past year plus, I finally decided to post my own problem here with hopes someone smarter than I can determine why my Win7 box has been crashing randomly for some time. Saga below...

Built the box in Dec 2010. Worked like a champ for some time. Started random crashes probably about a year later or so, not sure exactly when. Crashes are sporadic and seemingly random. They didn't happen all that often so I only spent a bit of time trying to troubleshoot. After a while, they started to get a bit more frequent but still not bad. At one point I ran MemTest numerous times and while most times it didn't have any errors, sometimes it did. Last fall I bought a couple of sticks of new RAM (F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL) and it seemed to help for a bit. After the crashes continued, I started to suspect something with the video card...

About half the time it crashes I get a BSOD, the other half the screen just goes all garbled and usually freezes required a hard reboot. In December I turned off the auto overclocking on my ASUS mobo's (M4A89GTD PRO/USB3) integrated graphics card (Radeon HD 4290), and that really seemed to help. There were only a few crashes over the next couple of months. Then, all hell broke loose mid-March. All of a sudden it was crashing several times a day, all with the same apparent randomness. I've started another battery of MemTest and still clean except once.

Why do I suspect the integrated graphics card? The problem seems to happen more often when there is something more active going on like a game, video, etc. Also, at times it actually has locked up in the BIOS and a couple of times while doing the MemTest (but no errors were reported). The one time there were errors in MemTest it was odd since it wasn't just a couple...it appeared to trigger something and started reporting continual errors until after about 30 seconds it locked up too. I've been testing with FurMark and while it's made it through a couple of times without crashing, most of the time it does crash. I've tried different shared memory settings for the integrated graphics thinking maybe the Sideport memory on the integrated graphics might be bad, but that hasn't been able to isolate the problem either.

So, not sure what else to do before I start buying new components...I'd rather not have to buy a new graphics card, mobo and CPU since the box I have now seems to be more than enough for us. Other details about the machine are below. I've also thought of doing a clean Win7 install, but since the problem appears to happen when I'm not even in Windows, I'd rather not go through that fun unless I have to. Next step is a new graphics card unless someone finds the smoking gun for me!

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 640
Mobo: M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
RAM: 2x F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL (originally 2x F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL)
Primary HDD: OCZ Vertex 2 60 GB (SDD) (have run scandisk several times, no problems)
Seconary HDD: WD 500 GB and an eSATA WD 1 TB
Powersupply: 600W Coolmaster Silent Pro (was replaced once during this ordeal due to a PSU failure, problem happened before and after).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Rob

Just FYI - a recent poster (early Nov 2011) states that they were advised by Asus to manually set their memory settings/timings/voltages because of issues with the M4 series of motherboards.
You can get the settings/timings/voltages from the website of your RAM manufacturer.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard! I STRONGLY suggest not using controller drivers older than mid-2012 with SSD's.
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
05 Jan 2013 - very interesting post about difficulties with the Marvell controllers even when not connected to the SSD drives: https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cr...-pc-reboots-when-waking-sleep.html#post169956
27 Feb 2013 - I'm starting to see much better reliability with SSD's using current (mid-2012 and later) storage drivers. I have withdrawn my objections to using these devices in everyday systems.

You have 3 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

You have numerous different error codes (so many that I lost count) The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

BugCheck Info: REFERENCE_BY_POINTER (18)
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000000, Object type of the object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg2: fffffa8009b451e0, Object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg3: 0000000000000002, Reserved
Arg4: ffffffffffffffff, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object?s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.
