Wsus is what Microsoft calls its updating service and you can use it to download a local copy of their updates for any Microsoft software including all the service packs. A single person with only one machine is better off doing things the normal way but if you have a couple extra machines and certainly once you start getting into virtualization esp. XPhttp://windowsforum.com/#_edn1 then the ability to have all the patches you might need for any of these machines all available when you need them without using up internet resources becomes the more attractive option.

http://windowsforum.com/#_ednref1 XP users without a wsus won't be able to patch it after April this year.

WSUS, or Windows Server Update Services, is indeed Microsoft's updating service that allows you to download a local copy of updates for Microsoft software, including service packs.

For an individual with just one machine, using the regular Windows Update process is sufficient. However, for those managing multiple machines or working with virtualization, especially older systems like Windows XP, having all the necessary patches available locally through WSUS can be a more efficient option. This approach reduces the reliance on internet resources and ensures that updates are readily accessible when needed.

This highlights the significance of having a system in place to manage updates effectively, especially for older operating systems that are no longer supported by regular updates from Microsoft.
