Some of the characters on the metro-style system dialog show up as a square instead of the actual character.
    missingFont.
Can anybody know how to fix this?

    TIA

Icons are typically stored in DLL files, so I'd wager you might have some corruption in one of these DLL files. Are the arrows only missing in System Settings or do you have the same issue in other metro style apps?

A quick procmon view of system settings shows 137 DLL files being accessed. From and elevated powershell prompt run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth one of those commands may find a problem and fix it.

Is this happening on your W10 machine prior to the Aug. 2nd W10 Anniversary Update(AU) being installed or after?? Please use the <winlogo-key + R> command to get the run box and type in the command <winver> and then the enter key. Please post back your exact W10 version number. For example, the pre-AU update version is v1511 b10586.545 or v1511 b10586.494.

I've not seen this problem on the pre-AU versions or the post-AU versions, so you could have Windows system file corruption as neemo astutely suggested. It would be helpful if we could get complete hardware specs on your computer. Is it a desktop PC or laptop? Is it a self-built PC or a custom-built PC? If so, we need Motherboard specs, GPU card specs, RAM & Hard Drive specs, as well as the exact Make/Model/Wattage of your PSU.

If this is too daunting, you might try to first BACKUP ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA FILES TO EXTERNAL MEDIA IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SO! And then attempt to rollback your system using SYSTEM RESTORE to a point in time prior to when your problem first began occurring. If the problem abates, you have fixed it!

And did this computer come with W10 pre-installed from the factory, or did you upgrade it yourself from an earlier version of windows. If so, which Windows version?

    Thanks, :)

Thanks for posting your W10 version back, yes, that is the latest post W10 AU version. And thanks for posting your Specs back too.
Did you attempt the SYSTEM RESTORE we recommended???

If that fails, we'll suggest some more drastic troubleshooting and repair methods. Let's see what happened when you attempted that first.

    Best, :encouragement:

I don't know if I want to try system restore since I don't think I remember when is the first time the problem occurred.

thanks for sharing your problem and eventual resolution, 4n3ver … i'd have been apprehensive with using system-restore in your case as well … hope to see you around more often.

p.s. interesting the symptoms also appeared on your windows smart-phone … if the two devices are synced, that means corruptions sync also? hmmm.
