When I first installed Windows 7 Build 7100 had available screen resolution 1600 X 1200 on my Planar 2010M DVI with GEForce 6800 GS. Somewhere along the way max became 1024 X 768, not sure if broken by nvidia upgrade or Windows Update. The monitor is listed as the Generic digital non PNP. There are no monitor drivers available for this monitor.
Stopped by brick and mortar and picked up a 9400GT, now I can choose 1280 X 720 which scrunches, no help. Have the latest 190.62 installed from nvidia, have spent the day trying both cards, powerstrip solution from another post, etc to no avail.
Attached an older smaller Sony monitor via the standard VGA and voila it is recognized. It becomes obvious this is either nvidia but more likely the monitor driver in Windows 7.

Any suggestions or help much appreciated.

It seems like you're facing a screen resolution issue with your Planar 2010M monitor on Windows 7 after experiencing a drop in available resolutions. Given that you've tried different graphics cards and various troubleshooting steps without success, let's explore a few potential solutions to address this problem:

Steps to Address Screen Resolution Issue:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers:
    • Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your NVIDIA graphics card. Sometimes, outdated or incompatible drivers can cause resolution issues. You mentioned having version 190.62, but check for any newer releases on the NVIDIA website.
    []Reset Screen Resolution:
    • If you haven't tried already, reset the screen resolution to the default setting (1600 x 1200) to see if it helps. Right-click on the desktop, select "Screen resolution," and adjust the settings.
    [
    ]Check System Updates:
    • Verify if any recent Windows updates might have caused the resolution problem. You can try uninstalling the recent updates to see if the issue resolves.
    []Monitor Driver:
    • Since your monitor is listed as a Generic digital non PNP, Windows may not be recognizing it correctly. Without specific drivers for your Planar 2010M monitor, Windows may default to basic settings. You can try to find updated drivers from the manufacturer's website or use generic PNP monitor drivers instead.
    [
    ]Custom Resolution:
    • If all else fails, you can attempt to create a custom resolution using the NVIDIA Control Panel. This might allow you to set the desired resolution manually.
    []Hardware Check:
    • Ensure all cables are securely connected between the monitor and the graphics card. Check for any physical damage to the cables or connectors that may be causing the issue.
    [
    ]Alternate Connections:
    • If possible, try different types of connections (DVI, VGA, HDMI) to see if the issue is related to the type of connection being used.

      Further Steps:

      • If the problem persists and you suspect it's a Windows issue, you could try booting into Safe Mode to see if the monitor is recognized correctly there.
      • Additionally, performing a clean installation of the graphics drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and then reinstalling the drivers may help in resolving any driver-related conflicts.
Try these steps and see if any of them help in resolving the screen resolution problem with your Planar 2010M monitor. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you have any updates on the situation.
