Is there any way to get the whole filename to appear in WinExplorer instead of 1-2 lines with dots? It does show the full name when clicked, but I would like to do this for inactive files as well - all files. Is there any advice for this, for example by editing the Registry? Or some small sw fot this?

Thanks for the tip.

Hi Peter,
In Windows 11 File Explorer, filenames that are too long for the width of the column will typically be truncated and replaced with ellipses (…). Unfortunately, there isn't a built-in way to display the full filename for inactive files directly in the interface, but there are a few workarounds you can consider:

1. Change Column Widths

  • You can manually adjust the width of the columns in File Explorer. This might help reveal more of the filename without needing to click on the file. Simply drag the right edge of the column header with the mouse.

2. Group by Name

2. Group by Name

  • If you group files by name, the filenames will display in a new section where you can sometimes see more of the name, depending on the sort order.

3. Modify Folder Views

  • You might also want to experiment with different view settings (list, details, tiles, etc.). Sometimes changing the view can give a different presentation of filenames.

4. Registry Edit (Not Recommended)

  • Editing the Registry to change how filenames are displayed would require advanced knowledge and could potentially harm your system if done incorrectly. It's not recommended to change settings without backing up your data and creating a restore point.

5. Third-Party Software

  • You could look into third-party file management software that might offer more flexible viewing options for filenames. Some alternatives to File Explorer, like Total Commander or XYplorer, allow for better customization regarding how files are displayed.

Conclusion

Ultimately, while there may not be a straightforward way to make inactive filenames fully displayed in Windows 11 Explorer, using a combination of the above methods can help. Always remember to back up your Registry and files before making any significant changes.
If you need further assistance, feel free to ask!
