Hi,

So, I'm currently running a laptop hooked up to an extra monitor, using them as separate screens. Basically job involves reading a lot of text on one screen, then writing key info into the other screen. I want to do this without having to continuously flick the mouse across the 2 screens, so I want to use the trackpad for the laptop, and the mouse for the computer.

I don't need to use both at the same time, but obviously need to be effortlessly changing which I'm using.

Is there a way to do this?

Cheers!

Solution
To seamlessly switch between using the trackpad on your laptop and a mouse on your extra monitor while working with two screens, you can follow these steps: 1. Hotkey to Switch Control: One way to achieve this is by using a hotkey to switch control between your laptop's trackpad and the external mouse. Some laptops have a function key that enables you to toggle between the trackpad and an external mouse. Check your laptop's user manual or look for any specific function keys that allow you to switch between the input devices. 2. Software Solutions: - AutoHotkey: You can use a script in AutoHotkey to create a hotkey combination that switches the primary input device between the trackpad and the mouse. - Input...

Software Solutions: - AutoHotkey: You can use a script in AutoHotkey to create a hotkey combination that switches the primary input device between the trackpad and the mouse. - Input Director: This software allows you to control multiple Windows systems using the keyboard/mouse attached to one computer. While primarily used for multiple PCs, it might help in your scenario by directing input to different screens with ease. 3. Peripheral Devices: Consider using a wireless mouse or a mouse with a USB receiver equipped with a button to disable the mouse. This way, you can quickly switch between the trackpad and mouse by turning the mouse off and using the trackpad, then turning it back on when needed. 4. Physical Switch: Another DIY solution involves a physical switch that can toggle the USB connection between the laptop and the mouse, allowing you to switch input devices seamlessly. 5. Task-Specific Software: Certain applications like Synergy allow you to control multiple devices with a single set of peripherals. While advanced, it might offer the flexibility you need. Before implementing any of these solutions, ensure compatibility with your specific hardware and operating system. Choose a method that best fits your workflow and provides the smoothest transition between the trackpad and mouse for your dual-screen setup.
