When I try to pin new folders to the Windows Explorer Taskbar icon, it drops the last one (past 22) off the list (also doesn't show any recent items). My display's 1280x1024, so it's not like it's huge, but I've still got enough space for another 15 or so. Is there a registry key that limits it?

Solution
When you pin folders to the Windows Explorer Taskbar icon, there is a limit to the number of items that can be displayed due to space constraints. While there isn't a specific registry key that limits the number of items, Windows dynamically adjusts the number of pinned items displayed based on the resolution of your screen and the available space on the taskbar. In your case, with a resolution of 1280x1024, you should have enough space for additional pinned items. However, Windows may still restrict the number of items displayed in order to maintain a clean and organized taskbar interface. Here are a few things you can try to address this issue:

However, Windows may still restrict the number of items displayed in order to maintain a clean and organized taskbar interface. Here are a few things you can try to address this issue:

1. Use Jump Lists:

Windows uses Jump Lists to show recent items and pinned items. If recent items are not showing up, make sure Jump Lists are enabled. To enable Jump Lists:
  • Right-click on the taskbar and go to "Properties."
  • Make sure that "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar" is checked under the "Start Menu" tab.
  • Also, ensure that "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar" is checked.

2. Clear the Recent Items List:

If recent items are not showing up, you can try clearing the recent items list to see if it resolves the issue. Here's how:
  • Right-click on the taskbar and go to "Properties."
  • Under the "Start Menu" tab, click on the "Customize" button.
  • Scroll down to the "Recent Items" section and set the number of recent items to display to zero.
  • Click on "OK" to apply the changes.

3. Reorganize Pinned Items:

Sometimes, reorganizing the pinned items can help ensure that all the desired folders are displayed on the taskbar. You can try unpinning some items and then pinning them back in a different order.

4. Third-Party Taskbar Customization Tools:

Consider using third-party taskbar customization tools that offer more flexibility in managing pinned items on the taskbar. These tools can sometimes provide additional options for managing and displaying pinned items. By following these steps, you may be able to optimize the display of pinned folders on the Windows Explorer Taskbar icon.
