Windows 8 OneDrive Transition: Storage Increase and Skydrive Conflict

Onedrive is now rolling out. The switch is being made from Skydrive to Onedrive and with this switch there is a nice surprise of storage space increase from the standard 7 GB to 10 GB. The only glitch I see/have ATM is; the PC still says Skydrive while the actual webpage has change to Onedrive.

Funny thing, just after I read this post I opened Windows Explorer and noticed that I now have a Skydrive folder.
I have never seen that before, but it is there along with my Dropbox folder.

I'm guessing that it just appeared because I logged into my Microsoft account for the first time in months tonight.

So you are saying that I can put up to 10 GB of stuff in this folder and it will be backed up in the cloud?

I'll have to check that out, I've used Dropbox but never Skydrive, or Onedrive whatever they call it.

I assume that it will sync and the stuff will be uploaded automatically when I sign into my MS account?

7 GB storage is still standard for newer users.

Your extra 3 GB must have come from this....

Thanks David....I found that out by digging a letter further. I now have 30 GB of storage, another bonus ....I missed out on the 100 GB bonus.

I've been using SkyDrive for about as long as it's been available. Early users were given 25G of space. Yesterday, I installed the Android app on my phone and setup the Camera Roll backup in order to get the 3G of bonus space. My pictures have been backed up, it's been over 24 hours and I have not received the bonus 3G space. However, I was given 100G of bonus space.

I'm not all that excited about the 100G of additional space since it will expire in 1 year, I'd rather have the 3G bonus since it is permanent. Anyway, for the time being I have 125G of free storage space. Not a bad deal.

Well, I put about 5 Gigs of stuff in it.
It only scratches the surface but I put in the stuff I really, really don't want to lose.

I've been thinking about Carbonite for a while but haven't done anything.
I haven't even looked up exactly what the deal is.

I don't get it.
Other than a matter of finance, why are we so gungho on online storage?

What's wrong with an external hard drive ?

A 1 TB can be had for under $61 US. Brand new.
A 500GB can be had for under $40 US.

If you have to pay for more storage space, what's wrong with an external hard drive ?
You don't need to "share " in order to get more storage space.
You don't have to worry about losing access to your files if the website goes down.
You always have your files in your possession whenever and wherever you want them.

Hey Davidhk129, for me it's not a matter of going for cloud storage or external storage....rather than what I can get for "free"....free is always better for me. Sure there are some limitations to using free software...but one can't knock free.

I'm not knocking your external practices...as I have several extra HDD's I use in my PC for storage...my next external adventure is a NAS type setup for my home network so everyone can use.

I guess the only reason I would have it so that if my house burns down there are some files I don't want to lose.
Other then that I don't have a problem with external hard drives.

I should load everything on a 1TB external and take it and leave it at a friends house.

For me, cloud storage is more about being able to access my files from my desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet or phone whether I'm home or out and about. As long as I have an internet connection I can stream movies or access other files using my portable devices without the need to bring along an external drive. I don't use on-line storage for backup, I use it to keep files that I wish to have access to from almost anywhere.

I don't have any paid storage, the free services have been adequate for me.
