SHORT VERSION:
I made the mistake of installing an OS on my desktop from a
Reinstallation disk that came with my Dell laptop. It actually
worked okay until I installed a Wireless PCI express adapter.
Things became unresponsive within a few hours of that and now
it will not boot, even in safe mode.
LONG VERSION:
I bought a custom built computer. The original OS was Windows 7
32-bit. I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit. Here is my mistake. I
used a Re-installation CD which came with my Dell laptop bought
a while ago. I used that to install Windows on my desktop. Big
mistake. My desktop was running fine for a week. Then I
installed a driver for a wireless adapter and plugged the
adapter into a PCI express slot on my mobo. It worked at first.
A few hours later, while editing video, my computer became
extremely slow. Sony Vegas worked perfectly, but my task
manager, Internet Explorer all just stopped working. I shut it
down, which also took an extremely long time. Now my system
won't boot at all, not with the CD or without it. Startup
Repair has been running for 12 hours "repairing disk errors"
and nothing has changed. Safe mode doesn't work. Last known
good configuration doesn't work. Memory Diagnostic returned no errors. I just closed out of startup repair and it tells me: "Root cause found: System Volume on disk is corrupt." That's the only meaningful thing I've found.
