Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums. Just made an account to ask this question.

Anyway, I upgraded my Studio XPS 13 from Vista 64 bit to Win7 64 bit using the upgrade cd from Dell a few days ago. Since, I've been having some problems with sound and the computer freezing.

First of all, since I upgraded, sound from youtube clips/any other streamed videos has been suffering some pretty bad slowdown. It's kind of hard to explain, but it happens every 30 seconds or so. The sound will get really slow and choppy for a few seconds. I tested it with an episode of The Office played off my hard drive, and it happened then too. Windows says my drivers are up to date, and I even tried rollbacking my driver, that didn't work either.

Second of all, my computer has a new tendancy to lock up whenever it pleases. It's happened when left idle, it's happened when booting windows, and it's happened like two minutes after the computer's been booted. It's extremely annoying and I don't know what's wrong.

So, my question is, does anyone know how to fix this? I love Windows 7, and I really don't want these problems marring my experience with it. And I reeaally don't want to have to do a clean install, but I will if I have to. Speaking of which, if no one knows how to fix my problems, are there any good guides out there for doing a clean install with an upgrade disc? Anyone have any links?

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the forums! It sounds like you're experiencing some frustrating issues after upgrading your Dell Studio XPS 13 from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I'll provide some guidance to help you address these problems:

Sound Issues:

The choppy and slow sound playback could be related to outdated or incompatible drivers. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:
  • Update Audio Drivers:
  • Visit the Dell website and download the latest audio drivers specifically designed for Windows 7 and your Dell Studio XPS 13 model. Install these drivers to ensure compatibility. [*Disable Enhancements:
  • Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray, select "Playback Devices," right-click your audio device, and choose "Properties." Disable all audio enhancements to see if that resolves the issue. [*Check Audio Settings:
  • Ensure that the audio settings in Windows are configured correctly. Adjust the sound quality settings in the Control Panel to see if it makes a difference.

System Freezing:

The system freezing could be caused by various factors, such as incompatible drivers, software conflicts, or hardware issues. Here's what you can do to address this problem: [*Check for Driver Updates:
  • Update all your drivers to the latest versions. Graphics, chipset, network, and other drivers can impact system stability. [*Scan for Malware:
  • Run a full system scan using an antivirus program to check for any malware that might be causing the freezes.
  • Check Event Viewer:
  • Use the Windows Event Viewer to check for any error messages or warnings that might provide insight into what is causing the system freezes.

Clean Install with Upgrade Disc:

If you decide to perform a clean install using your upgrade disc, follow these general steps:
  • Boot from the Windows 7 upgrade disc and choose the Custom installation option.
  • Do not enter the product key during the installation; you can activate Windows later.
  • Once the installation is complete, activate Windows using the upgrade product key.

Additional Resources:

If you need more detailed guidance on performing a clean install or troubleshooting Windows 7 issues, you can refer to the following resources:
  • Microsoft's official https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/971762
  • Dell's support website for specific drivers and guides tailored to your Studio XPS 13 model. By following these steps and resources, you should be able to improve the performance of your upgraded system. Let me know if you need further assistance or have any other questions!
