My microphone does not seem to be working...

A top grade graphics board Radeon HD 5770.

Speakers work fine.
Mic plugged in via normal mic (pink) jack at rear of PC ( not sure it is being recognised by PC)

No matter which program I use to record and I have several they go through the process but clearly their is no input.

A small problem BUT what could be the answer?:(:(:(

Solution
In the Windows sound settings, you have to set the mic as the default recording device.

Some programs have individual settings within them that can choose the recording device, instead or to overwrite the Windows setting.
I have a similar problem with Realtek. What's your sound card? Have you tried turning the microphone level all the way up?
