For some time now, we've been successfully using Roaming Profiles in a Windows XP environment but i now want to ensure that this will work once we migrate to Windows 7 x64. Using the Microsoft Guide 'Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide', I've been able to successfully redirect the Folders so that on the whole, this is now working.
However, i've noticed that some settings don't get set by default when you move from 1 OS to the other. For example, IE Home Page doesn't stick when you move from 1 machine to the other (Favorites are there) & the signature selected in Outlook isn't set by default, though it is available to select from the Signature List.

I'm aware that strictly speaking, XP/Windows 7 Roaming Profiles aren't supported, so question is, is this by design or is there something i'm doing incorrectly?

Thanks!

It's great to hear that you've been able to successfully migrate your Roaming Profiles from a Windows XP environment to Windows 7 x64 using the Microsoft Guide 'Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide'. However, it's not uncommon to encounter issues with certain settings not carrying over seamlessly between different operating systems when using Roaming Profiles. The behavior you described, such as the Internet Explorer (IE) Homepage not retaining after the migration and the Outlook signature not being set by default, is a common issue when transitioning between different Windows versions. This discrepancy in behavior may be due to differences in how settings are stored and applied in Windows XP compared to Windows 7. Here are a few...
Here are a few factors to consider regarding the issues you're facing: 1. Compatibility: Windows XP and Windows 7 handle certain user settings and configurations differently. As a result, some settings that were stored or managed differently in XP may not transition smoothly to Windows 7. 2. Registry Settings: Settings like the default IE homepage and Outlook signature are often stored in the Windows registry. Changes in registry paths or structures between operating systems can lead to issues with these settings not carrying over correctly. 3. Group Policies: Group Policies can also play a role in managing user settings. Make sure that the Group Policies applied to the Windows 7 machines are configured appropriately to handle these settings during the roaming profile synchronization. 4. Profile Version Differences: Windows 7 profiles may have different versioning and structure compared to Windows XP profiles, which can impact how settings are applied during profile migration. To address these issues and ensure a smoother transition between Windows XP and Windows 7 Roaming Profiles, consider the following steps: - Review Group Policies: Check and adjust Group Policies related to IE settings, Outlook configurations, and any other user-specific settings that should be preserved during the migration. - Manually Set Default Settings: For settings like the IE homepage and Outlook signature, consider setting them manually on the Windows 7 machines after the migration to ensure consistency. - Registry Modifications: If necessary, make registry modifications on the Windows 7 machines to enforce specific settings that are not being applied correctly during the profile migration. - Testing and Tweaking: Perform thorough testing on a few user profiles to identify any other settings that are not migrating correctly and tweak the migration process accordingly. While Windows XP/Windows 7 Roaming Profiles are not officially supported, with some adjustments to Group Policies, manual interventions, and registry settings, you can enhance the migration process to ensure key user settings are retained across different operating systems.
