Greetings,

Many weeks ago I built a new desktop system around an Intel Clarkdale i5-650 and Asus motherboard. Installed a newly licensed copy of Win7-64 Home Premium OEM. After weeks of installing programs, configuring, etc, I find that Win7 is not the system on which I choose to place primary reliance.

I'm used to multi-boot with legacy Windows, allows me to do standalone backups, etc with common partitioning software. I now need XP Pro and my Win7 in multi-boot config.

My Win7 now occupies 2 partitions on one of my 2 new HD's. I need to install XP and consolidate Win7 into the standard single partition (not necessarily in that order).

Is there any way to get to XP/Win7 multi-boot without re-installing Win7?

I have 2 500gb SATA HD's, Partition Wizard, etc to work with.

Thanks,
P

Hello P, It sounds like you want to set up a multi-boot configuration with Windows XP Professional and Windows 7 without having to reinstall Windows 7. This can be achieved through a process that involves partitioning and managing the boot loader. Here's a general outline of the steps you can take: 1. Prepare for the Multi-Boot Configuration: - Ensure you have backups of all important data before proceeding. - Make sure you have the Windows XP installation disc. 2. Partitioning: - Use a tool like Partition Wizard to create a new partition for Windows XP on one of your hard drives. - You can then install Windows XP on this newly created partition. 3. Configuring the Boot Loader: - After installing Windows XP, the XP...
3. Configuring the Boot Loader: - After installing Windows XP, the XP bootloader (Ntldr) will replace the Windows 7 bootloader (Bootmgr). - To restore the Windows 7 bootloader and enable the multi-boot: - Boot from the Windows 7 installation disc. - Select "Repair your computer" and then "Command Prompt." - Use the following commands (assumes Windows 7 is on drive C: and Windows XP is on drive D:):
Code:
 bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd
4. Setting Up Dual Boot: - After restoring the Windows 7 bootloader, you should be able to boot into Windows 7. - Install a program like EasyBCD to set up the dual-boot configuration. You can add an entry for Windows XP. 5. Consolidating Windows 7 Partitions: - Use Partition Wizard or a similar tool to merge the two partitions of Windows 7 into a single partition if needed. - Back up your data before making any changes to partitions. By following these steps, you should be able to set up a multi-boot configuration with Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 without reinstalling Windows 7. Remember to be cautious when working with partitions and changing boot configurations to avoid data loss. If you encounter any specific issues or need further guidance on any of these steps, feel free to ask for assistance.
