When I mouse over something in my taskbar, it does it's usual mouse over thing, highlight the icon, maybe make the color of active items move with my mouse, the usual stuff.

But when I move my mouse away from the taskbar, it still behaves as if the mouse is over whatever icon. A log out and a log back in fixes it...temporarily.

Anyone know a more permanent solution?

Solution
The issue you are experiencing with the taskbar behavior, where it continues to act as though the mouse is over an icon even after moving the cursor away, can be frustrating. This problem might be caused by a variety of factors, including system glitches, software conflicts, or outdated drivers. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue more permanently:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Restart Windows Explorer: Sometimes restarting the Windows Explorer process can resolve taskbar-related issues. Here's how you can do it:

[]Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause issues with graphical elements on your system. Ensure your graphics drivers are up-to-date by visiting the manufacturer's website and downloading the latest drivers for your specific graphics card model. []Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your system is up-to-date by checking for and installing any pending Windows updates. This can often address known issues and bugs. []Run System File Checker (SFC): The System File Checker tool scans and repairs system files for corruptions. Here's how you can run it:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete.

]Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts: Sometimes third-party applications can interfere with the normal behavior of the taskbar. Try disabling startup programs or uninstalling recent applications to see if the issue persists. []Create a New User Profile: Creating a new user profile can help determine if the issue is specific to your user account. If the problem doesn't occur in a new profile, consider using the new profile or further troubleshooting the existing one. []Restore System Settings: If the issue started recently, you can try using System Restore to revert your system to a point before the problem occurred.

    Additional Tips:

    • Ensure your system has ample free disk space.
    • Regularly perform maintenance tasks like disk cleanup and disk defragmentation.
