Tesla has reportedly submitted paperwork to secure approval for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Italy, potentially extending the driver-assistance system’s recent European rollout. Not a Tesla App reported that an Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport official confirmed the documentation had reached the ministry and was under review.
The key word remains supervised. Tesla’s branding has long caused confusion, but FSD (Supervised) is an advanced driver-assistance system, not an autonomous-driving approval. The driver must remain attentive, monitor the road and take control whenever necessary.
Italy is not starting from a blank regulatory slate. The Netherlands’ RDW vehicle authority issued Tesla a provisional European type approval for FSD (Supervised) on April 10, 2026. That approval gave other countries a reference point for national acceptance while the broader EU process remains unresolved.
Denmark’s road-safety authority confirmed in June that it had accepted the Dutch approval on a provisional basis, explicitly noting that drivers remain responsible for the vehicle. Belgium followed shortly afterward. Tesla’s own European FSD page currently lists the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark and Belgium among the countries where the feature is available.
For Italian Tesla owners, a submitted application is only the beginning. Authorities still need to assess whether the system’s operating conditions, vehicle configurations and local road rules meet national requirements. There is no confirmed activation date, software version or list of eligible Italian models.
That objection matters because an EU-level approval could eliminate much of the country-by-country friction now facing Tesla. It also shows why Italy’s review should not be read as an automatic green light: the system remains subject to national restrictions, regulatory interpretation and software changes.
Tesla’s terminology does not alter the legal role of the person behind the wheel. FSD (Supervised) can handle steering, acceleration, braking, lane changes and route navigation in supported conditions, but it does not permit drivers to disengage from driving.
