Getting an error No idea of what it means - windows update seems to be functioing as expected - showing No important updates, recent check at 10:07 today, and optionl update for Security Essentials published today:

It is definitely a program trying to write a registry value and it isn't being allowed to.
There seems to be a consensus of opinion that this might often be caused by an Antivirus product and just about everyone one of them you can name has been ID'd as a potential culprit.
My suggestion would be....
Uninstall any current security suite software you are using and reboot your computer.
If the problem seems to have been resolved then I would at the very least attempt to acquire the latest version of that Security Suite and attempt a new install.
AND
Of course, make sure that you are not running multiple Antivirus product simultaneously.
