I created a Windows 10 recovery drive on USB a while ago and I reckon I could create an updated version from ;media creation tool'. Can anyone tell me if I can then use this to install Windows 10 on a new PC when I stop using this 8 year old slow model? I have a product code for the original Windows 8 I installed and then updated free of charge to Windows 10. I am not a super geek and am a bit aprhensive of carying out the task - it leads me to think I should just put upwith the slow 'programme unresponsive' messages

When you create a Windows 10 recovery drive using the Media Creation Tool, it's typically used for troubleshooting issues or repairing an existing Windows installation on the same PC. However, you can create a bootable USB drive with the Windows 10 installation files using the Media Creation Tool and use it to install Windows 10 on a new PC. Here's what you need to consider and the steps to follow:
Things to Consider:
- Windows Licensing:
- Your Windows product key from the older PC might not be transferrable to a new PC. When installing Windows on a new PC, you might need a new product key.
- If your current Windows installation was upgraded from Windows 8 for free, the digital entitlement to Windows 10 is tied to that specific PC's hardware. It may not automatically work on a new PC.
Steps to Create a Bootable USB Drive with Windows 10:
- Download the Media Creation Tool on your current PC.
- Run the tool and follow the instructions to create installation media (USB flash drive or ISO file).
- Insert the bootable USB drive into the new PC.
- Boot the new PC from the USB drive (you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS/UEFI settings).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10.
- During installation, skip the product key entry if prompted. You can enter it later.
- After installation, go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation to enter a new product key if required.
- Ensure you have the necessary drivers for the new PC components.
- Check for Windows Updates after installation for the latest patches and drivers. By creating a new Windows 10 installation USB, you can attempt to install it on a new PC. However, be prepared to purchase a new Windows license if needed and ensure you have the necessary drivers for the new hardware.
