Unidentified mac address ,can you ping it ?

Hi

Dad says whilst going on a clean out of the multiple devices registered to the router he found one that had uploaded a lot of data to the Internet. He didn't have an ip address but I have wondered if we see it again can we ping it either in Windows or Linux to see what the mysterious device is? If so what's the command?

You can't ping mac addresses, that's layer two networking ping (ICMP) is layer three. You can upload the MAC in a OUI look up tool and ID the manufacturer. The OUI is the first half of the MAC. Wireshark · OUI Lookup Tool
