Earlier yesterday I upgraded from XP to Windows 7. I installed my graphics driver via CD, updated Windows 7 and suddenly my DVD drive did nothing. I checked event viewer only to see a string of error 51's like this

what the hell happened?

I've tried uninstalling the DVD drive from device manager, ran /scannow, system restore, checked for firmware updates, reinstalled the motherboard chipset drivers. I've searched online for some answers but haven't found any.

Install the video driver from one of these links, depending on if you have NVIDIA or ATI/AMD card:

NVIDIA - Link Removed - Invalid URL

ATI/AMD - Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

----------

Then follow this to fix the DVD drive:

  1. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image
    VistaStartButton.jpg

, and then click All Programs.
  2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
  3. Type regedit, and then click OK. Collapse this imageExpand this image
    SecurityShield.jpg

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  5. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  8. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  10. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  11. Exit Registry Editor.
  12. Restart the computer.

Wow, thanks for the extremely fast response. I had seen that fix posted on another forum but when I go to the spot in the registry I don't see anything marked upperfilters or lowerfilters, I have attached a screenshot (hopefully correctly) of that part of my registry.

Try another disc in the drive. Those errors could be from a dirty disc or whatnot. Nothing really to worry about if it actually works.

I've tried several discs, games software, interestingly if I put an audio CD in media player autoplays but I get no sound and I can't change the track or open the CD through "my computer" so it knows something is there.

I also just noticed it says I have a floppy drive.....I do not. Flash drives are detected and work fine.

Darth did you actually 'upgrade' from xp or do a clean install? If you 'upgraded' then please re-install using the 'custom install' method. Microsoft recommends when moving from xp to 7 to perform a clean install only. Upgrading has shown to create bugs within the installation.

So I got really hacked off and reinstalled everything from the ground up. The drive worked fine, long enough to install Office 2003 without a problem and then all of a sudden it's back to not working yet again. wtf?? Windows 7 is nice, but if I can't have a DVD drive it's useless.

WOO HOO!!! After much searching I came across a post that talked about the DMA modes getting messed up. I have no idea what any of those settings do but going into device manager selecting the ATA controller for my drive and unchecking the "enable DMA" box until it went into PIO mode fixed my problem. Thanks to the guys who made suggestions for me.
