I currently have Vista Home Premium on my laptop. I am able to purchase the upgrade to W7 Pro for only $40 through my school. They only have the Pro and Ultimate discounted. I would rather purchase the Pro but I thought that I read somewhere that I would have to do a custom install if I wanted to go with this version. Is this correct and if so, how difficult is it going to be? Thanks!!

No reason to do a double pass or remove any files. Your OS does qualify to use an upgrade DVD, but you will have to do a custom install to Windows 7 Pro. Hopefully, you are going to get a hard copy DVD, but if you have to download something, download the .iso file an burn it as an image to a DVD.
If you went to Ultimate, you could do an in-place upgrade, but most of us advise against it.
