Windows Vista vista 64 having 32 bit program problems

i have vista ultimate on my brand new laptop and i am trying to install some software for my handheld gps. it starts to install untill 8% is complete and gives me an error and cannot complete the install. called the software tech support and they said its not compatible with a 64 bit os. is there anyway around this? we tried to open it in the control panel using an earlier version of windows to no avail. please be easy on me as i am not very computer savvy!!! plaese help me
