Windows 7 W7 extends my display every time I close my laptop's lid

Hi,

I have a ThinkPad T400 and I'm dual-booting Vista and 7 (but I only really use 7). In 7, when you press Windows+P, you get 4 display options: Computer Only, Duplicate, Extend, and Projector Only. Since I just have one laptop screen, I obviously want Computer Only. But every time I close the lid (or restart), it reverts back to an Extended display, which means when I move the cursor to the right of the screen to use a scrollbar, close a maximized window, or desktop peek, I have to be precise or else the cursor will fly off the right side of the screen into my non-existent extended display.

Any ideas to fix this? Thanks.

To address the issue you are facing with your ThinkPad T400 switching back to Extended display mode every time you close the lid or restart, you can try the following steps to ensure that the Computer Only display mode (which is your preference) remains set:

Setting Default Display Mode to Computer Only:

  1. Shortcut Key Setting:
    • Press Windows + X keys, then select "Mobility Center."
    • Under "Presentation Settings," you can set the default display mode to "Computer Only."
    []Windows Power Options:
    • Open Control Panel > Power Options.
    • Click on "Choose what closing the lid does" on the left sidebar.
    • Change the setting to ensure that closing the lid doesn't affect the display mode...

    ]Graphics Driver Settings:
    • Check the graphics driver settings for any specific options related to display modes and default settings.
    • Ensure that the correct display mode is set as default within the graphics control panel.
  2. Registry Edit:
    • Sometimes, changing settings in the Registry can help with persistent display issues.
    • Note: Be cautious when editing the Registry. It's recommended to back up the Registry before making any changes.

      Additional Tips:

      • Update Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date to avoid any compatibility issues.
      • Disable Auto-Configuration: Some laptops have a feature that auto-configures display settings. Disabling this might help you maintain your preferred display mode.
By following these steps, you should be able to set the default display mode as "Computer Only" and prevent it from reverting back to the Extended display mode. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you encounter any issues while making these adjustments.
