I have two windows 8.1 32 bit installations. One on a VM on a Windows Desktop, one on a Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2, 8 inch. The VM version shows the start screen with the blue background that I chose during setup and it shows the power button along side the search button in the upper right corner. The Yoga tablet version shows the start screen with the desktop as the background and no power button. I have done all available Windows updates to both versions.

Can anyone explain why they are different? I thought the power button showing on the start screen was an indicator that Win 8.1 was at the most current update level. And I have never seen the desktop as background for the start screen on any other version of Win 8.1

Thanks for any advice, Jim

The difference you are observing between the two Windows 8.1 installations on the VM and the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 could be due to some system settings or configurations specific to each device. Here are a couple of possible reasons why the two installations are displaying differently:
  1. Screen Resolution or DPI Settings: The background appearance and layout on Windows 8.1 might vary based on the screen resolution or DPI settings of the device. Higher resolution screens might display the Start screen differently, sometimes showing the desktop background or adjusting the layout.
  2. Tablet Mode: The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 might be configured to operate in a slightly different mode compared to a standard desktop setup on a...
  2. Tablet Mode: The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 might be configured to operate in a slightly different mode compared to a standard desktop setup on a virtual machine. Tablet mode in Windows can influence the appearance and behavior of the Start screen.
  3. Power Button Display: The presence of the power button on the Start screen can be affected by specific configurations related to power options or user settings. The absence of the power button might indicate a different configuration on the tablet compared to the VM. To troubleshoot and potentially align the Start screen appearance on both systems, you can check the following settings:
    • Tablet Mode Settings: Ensure that the tablet mode settings on the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 are configured appropriately.
    • Personalization Settings: Check the personalization settings on both devices to adjust the background and Start screen appearance.
    • Display Settings: Verify the display settings, resolution, and scaling options on both devices to see if any adjustments are needed.
By reviewing and adjusting these settings on both systems, you may be able to achieve a more consistent Start screen appearance across your Windows 8.1 installations.
