Windows 7 win7 won't accept password entry

When I start win7 from a cold boot and type the password, nothing appears in the password window. Then if I do a restart and then select "start windows normally" the password is accepted normally. This is not fatal but is inconvenient as I have to do it every time I start the computer. Any ideas?

Troubleshooting suggestions :

1. Do a system file check...........
Start button > type cmd > top left, right click at cmd.exe > select Run As Administration > at the flashing prompt, type sfc /scannow > press Enter key.
Will take quite a while.
When finished, it will tell you one of the followings : (paraphrasing )
No integrity violation.
Found corrupt files and successfully repaired.
Found corrupt files but unable to do repair.
If it finds corrupt files and has successfully done the repair, try the password issue.
If it finds corrupt files but unable to do repair, please post back.

2. Do a disk check...........
Start button > type cmd > top left, right click at cmd.exe > select Run As Administration > at the flashing prompt, type chkdsk /f/r > press Enter key.
( paraphrasing ) System will say it can not be done now. Do you want to do it on restart ?
Type Y as in yes.
Restart computer.
Will take a long while.
When finished, it will give you a summary report.
