Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27909 to the Canary Channel, focusing on enhancing system stability and addressing several critical issues reported by users.

Key Fixes and Improvements

Administrator Protection

An issue preventing the Xbox app from launching when administrator protection was enabled has been resolved. This problem also affected other applications, resulting in errors 0xC0000142 or 0xC0000045.

Settings

The battery percentage, which was missing from the top of the System > Power & Battery page in previous builds, has been restored.

Remote Desktop

Users on Arm64 PCs experienced severe graphical distortions and rendering issues during remote desktop sessions. This build addresses and fixes these problems.

Other Fixes

  • A high-frequency crash related to pcasvc.dll has been addressed.
  • An issue where Media Player would still display an option to disconnect from a device even after it was disconnected externally has been fixed.
  • Problems causing Remote Credential Guard scenarios between the latest Windows 11 builds and Server 2022 (and earlier) to fail have been resolved.

Known Issues

General

  • Copilot+ PCs: Transitioning to the Canary Channel from other channels or retail versions may result in the loss of Windows Hello PIN and biometric sign-in capabilities, displaying error 0xd0000225. Users can recreate their PIN by selecting "Set up my PIN."
  • Some users may encounter repeated bug checks with the error KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE after upgrading, particularly when connecting to VPNs.
  • This build temporarily plays the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the Windows 11 boot sound. A fix is expected in a future release.

Settings

  • Interacting with options under Settings > System > Power & Battery may cause the Settings app to crash.
  • Apostrophes in Settings and related dialogs may display incorrectly, showing random characters.

Critical Analysis

This build demonstrates Microsoft's commitment to refining Windows 11 by addressing user-reported issues. The restoration of the battery percentage indicator and the resolution of graphical distortions in remote desktop sessions are significant improvements. However, the presence of known issues, such as the potential loss of biometric sign-in capabilities and the temporary reversion to the Windows Vista boot sound, indicates that users should proceed with caution when updating to this build.
Users are encouraged to report any additional issues through the Feedback Hub to assist Microsoft in further enhancing the operating system's stability and performance.
