Microsoft has unveiled Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27881 to the Canary Channel, introducing several enhancements aimed at refining user experience and accessibility.
Profanity Filter Setting for Voice Typing
A notable addition is the new profanity filter setting for voice typing. Users can now choose to enable or disable the filtering of profane language during voice input. When enabled, profane words are masked with asterisks; when disabled, they are transcribed as spoken. To adjust this setting, open voice typing (Win + H), select the settings icon, and toggle the "Filter profanity" option.
Speech Recap in Narrator
Another significant feature is the introduction of speech recap in Narrator. This functionality allows users to review the last few phrases spoken by Narrator, providing a quick reference to recent announcements or instructions. This enhancement aims to improve the efficiency and intuitiveness of the Narrator experience for users who rely on screen reading.
Availability and Installation
ISOs for Build 27881 are available for download, enabling users to perform clean installations if desired. Microsoft has also noted that SDKs for the 27xxx series builds will not be released at this time.
Implications and User Feedback
These updates reflect Microsoft's ongoing commitment to user-centric design and accessibility. The ability to control the profanity filter in voice typing addresses user feedback for more personalized input experiences. Similarly, the speech recap feature in Narrator enhances usability for individuals who depend on screen reading technologies.
Users are encouraged to provide feedback on these features through the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under the respective categories: Input and Language > Voice Typing for the profanity filter, and Accessibility > Narrator for the speech recap feature.
As with all Canary Channel releases, these features are in the early stages of development and may undergo further refinements based on user feedback and testing outcomes.
