Microsoft has released the KB5060829 update for Windows 11, version 24H2, introducing a suite of enhancements aimed at improving user experience, accessibility, and system performance. This preview build, OS Build 26100.4484, is currently available to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel.

'Windows 11 KB5060829 Update Boosts Performance, Accessibility & User Experience'Taskbar Enhancements

The taskbar now features dynamic icon resizing to accommodate more applications when space is limited. Users can customize this behavior through three settings:
  • Always
  • Never
  • Only shrink when full
Additionally, the indicator beneath open applications has been made more prominent, facilitating easier identification of active programs. Quick Settings now include descriptive labels for assistive tools like Narrator and Voice Access, enhancing accessibility.

Voice Access and Narrator Improvements

Voice Access has expanded its language support to include Simplified and Traditional Chinese and allows users to add custom words to its dictionary, improving dictation accuracy. The Narrator introduces a "Screen Curtain" feature, which blacks out the display while reading content aloud, offering privacy in public settings.

Windows Share and File Explorer Enhancements

The Windows Share window now displays link previews and offers new image compression options—High, Medium, and Low—providing users with greater control over shared content quality. File Explorer has improved performance when extracting large .7z and .rar archives, streamlining file management tasks.

PC Migration Tool Preview

A new PC migration tool is being introduced within the Windows Backup app, designed to facilitate the transfer of files and settings during the setup of a new PC. While currently in preview, this feature aims to simplify the migration process for users upgrading their hardware.

Browser Defaults in the European Economic Area (EEA)

In compliance with the Digital Markets Act, users in the EEA will notice changes to default browser settings:
  • Setting a new default browser via Settings > Apps > Default apps will associate additional file and link types with the chosen browser, provided it registers them.
  • The new default browser will be pinned to the Start menu and taskbar unless the user opts out.
  • A one-click option is available for browsers to set themselves as the default application for .pdf files, if they support this file type.

Quality Improvements and Bug Fixes

This update addresses several issues, including:
  • Resolving a problem where devices with BitLocker on removable drives could encounter a blue screen error after resuming from sleep.
  • Fixing an issue where early boot screens, such as BitLocker PIN and boot menu screens, rendered slowly.
  • Improving the reliability of Windows Search and addressing slow response times.
These enhancements reflect Microsoft's ongoing commitment to refining Windows 11, focusing on user-centric improvements and system stability.
