when i go to control panel\backup and restore\set up backup the control panel closes and a windows explorer window opens.

WHY???

on a good system a popup opens saying windows backup is starting.

thx

I suppose some questions..

Does the Backup Panel say Windows Backup has not been set up? If the explorer window is not the Starting Backup notice window, what window is it?

Since one of the first things it does is to check for possible backup locations, do you have hard drive space available for the backup?

Do you have an anti-virus running that might be interfering?

Any messages in the Event Viewer around the time you attempt to start the backup?

And just to check, you might run the System File Checker. Open an administrative command prompt and type the following command with Enter after.

SFC /scannow

Let it finish and make note if it mentions that some files cannot be repaired.

thx

I never get to the backup panel
the WE is a normal WE window - can't remember which folder it is in.
the FIRST thing it should do (I think) is to display the "Windows Backup is starting" popup - does not do that
never gets to the point of looking for a backup location - plenty of HDD space.
did not chk the event viewer
windows essentials and a trial McAfee thing
not sure if I ran SFC but I think I did.

Is it possible that your system (no system specs so we don't know what system you are currently having problems with) has some installed software (Acer->eRecovery) that has displaced the Windows 7 Backup software and causing this issue?
