Windows 7 Windows 7 Freezing

I have noticed ever since installing windows 7 that it will for no apparent reason freeze, although the mouse will happily move as normal. I cannot get anything else to work. Cut a long story short, I managed to run task manager and found that wmpnetwk.exe was the culprit. Having told the pc to end this process all resumes as normal. However, at random intervals it will start up again.

Does anyone know what this is and how to disable it? It is consuming vast amounts of my system resources. I have an ASUS MTV-TM motherboard with an Athlon 3800+ processor & 2GB memory

to stop it from starting you need to stop the service from starting up at windows boot time
1: click start
2: on the right hand side, right click "Computer" and click manage
3: when computer management console opens click on the services and application tree
4: click services
5: scroll down to "Windows media player network sharing service"
6: right click and choose properties
7: change "Start Up Type" to disabled
8: click apply and ok then close all open windows and reboot TADA no more wmpns service

if he just disables the service it'll do what you describe in "1" aswell without having to open media player
