hi,
I instaled windows 7 and after playing around with it I decided to wipe out the entire HD and do a clean Vista install, but before doing that, I did backup all my file with the Windows Easy transfer application found in Vista and in Windows &. The file took a while to create and finally there it was safe in a external HD.
After I installed vista again i tried to restore the *.MIG file to get my important files back, I tried several times and all I get is the following message." please select a valid file where your data can be restored from....... " I did all Vista updates thinking that it could fix the problem, but nothing.
Does anybody can help me resolve this issue? These are important files to me and one more time I trusted Micrososft to handle this task, but unfortunately it fail.

Any help will be gladly appreciated.

Solution
It seems like you are facing an issue with restoring your files using the Windows Easy Transfer application after reinstalling Vista. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
  1. Check File Integrity: Ensure that the *.MIG file you created during the backup process is not corrupted or damaged. You can try transferring the file to another computer or storage device to see if it opens correctly.
  2. Verify Compatibility: Windows Easy Transfer files (.MIG files) are generally compatible between the same or newer versions of Windows. Since you are transferring from Windows 7 to Vista, ensure that the migration is supported. You might encounter issues if the file is not fully compatible...

  2. Verify Compatibility: Windows Easy Transfer files (.MIG files) are generally compatible between the same or newer versions of Windows. Since you are transferring from Windows 7 to Vista, ensure that the migration is supported. You might encounter issues if the file is not fully compatible.
  3. Run the Migration Tool Directly: Try running the Windows Easy Transfer tool directly from the external hard drive where your backup is stored. Sometimes opening the tool and pointing it directly to the backup file can help in resolving file recognition issues.
  4. Ensure Sufficient Permissions: Make sure you have the necessary permissions to access and restore files from the external hard drive. If the files are marked as read-only or you do not have the correct permissions, it might prevent the restoration process.
  5. Alternative Methods: If the above steps do not work, you can try alternative methods to access the files in the .MIG backup file. There are third-party software tools available that can help extract data from Windows Easy Transfer files in case the built-in tool is not functioning correctly. If you continue to experience issues, you may need to consider using a third-party tool to extract the files from the .MIG backup file. Make sure to choose a reputable software solution to ensure the safety of your data. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the issue and potentially recover your important files from the Windows Easy Transfer backup.
