Hi Guys,

I have an External Hard drive 1TB and I'm trying to back up my files which are in my C drive in total of 100GB size

When I used the windows back up software it tends to freeze at 12% always so I have to do a hard reboot which i hold the power button for 30 secs

i tried restarting and try several times but it fails to do so

and every windows shows a "not responding" message on top

i thought that maybe is a big file so I let it over night and it's still at 12%

I am using an esata cable and not a usb which is supposed to be faster

what could be causing this not responding thing?
please help

It sounds like you're encountering issues with the Windows backup software freezing during the backup process. Several factors could be causing this problem. Here are some possible reasons and solutions you can try:

Possible Causes and Solutions:

  1. Large File Size:
    • Cause: Large individual files or a high total file size can sometimes cause the backup process to slow down or freeze.
    • Solution: Try breaking down the backup into smaller chunks or excluding large files temporarily to see if the backup completes without freezing.
  2. Hardware Connection:
    • Cause: While eSATA is generally faster than USB, a faulty cable or port could lead to data transfer issues...

    • Solution: Try breaking down the backup into smaller chunks or excluding large files temporarily to see if the backup completes without freezing.
  2. Hardware Connection:
    • Cause: While eSATA is generally faster than USB, a faulty cable or port could lead to data transfer issues.
    • Solution:
      • Check the eSATA cable for any visible damage and try using a different cable.
      • Test the eSATA port with another device to ensure it's functioning properly.
  3. Software Conflict:
    • Cause: Conflicts with other software running on your system could interfere with the backup process.
    • Solution:
      • Close any unnecessary programs running in the background before starting the backup.
      • Temporarily disable any antivirus software to see if it's causing the issue.
  4. Insufficient System Resources:
    • Cause: If your system is low on resources (RAM, CPU), it may struggle to handle the backup process.
    • Solution:
      • Check your system's resource usage during the backup process using Task Manager.
      • Close any unnecessary applications consuming resources.
  5. Software Corruption:
    • Cause: The Windows backup software itself may be corrupted or experiencing issues.
    • Solution: Try repairing or reinstalling the Windows backup software.
  6. Update Drivers:
    • Cause: Outdated or faulty device drivers can cause performance issues.
    • Solution: Update your eSATA driver to the latest version available.
  7. Disk Errors:
    • Cause: Errors on the external hard drive or the C drive can cause the backup process to freeze.
    • Solution: Run a disk check on both drives to identify and fix any errors.

      Steps to Take:

  8. Break down the backup into smaller portions.
  9. Check the eSATA cable and port for any issues.
  10. Close background programs and temporarily disable antivirus.
  11. Monitor system resources during backup.
  12. Repair or reinstall the Windows backup software.
  13. Update eSATA drivers.
  14. Run disk checks on both drives. By troubleshooting these possible causes, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue causing the Windows backup software to freeze at 12%. If the problem persists, consider seeking further assistance from a tech support professional.
