Wow! Ok, this worked. I'm not in the Windows Store and apps will open again. Thank you so much!

Can you explain why this worked? And what causes this issue?

It could be that you don't have a high enough screen resolution,as you need to have above 1026 to run Metro apps. I have this problem myself on my netbooks though there is a registry edit you can do to make your screen resolution higher. Though it does not always work.

Still having this problem.. The Windows store and all related apps have not worked for MONTHS.. and I still am without 8.1

There's definitely something wrong with your Win 8. Why don't you back up your files and perform a system recovery, download windows update and you should be back on track once and for all. Why do you keep waiting for months for the solution to come up? System recovery and re-installation of your programs will only take a few hours. It's the weekend. This is the perfect time to do it.

Well I am running Windows 8 on a netbook. So I don't have any Metro apps because they don't work on a netbook. Because of the screen resolution problem.Though I don't care, as I use all of the software from Windows XP and Windows 7 on 8. So I don't need Metro apps.

Good one, Andrea. So many complaints regarding the us of the Modern and the modern Apps. If users don't like them, then it is free choice - don't use them. I tried for a while, and didn't really find anything new in them, except for the slight inconvenience of having them full screen (Passed that phase by using Modermix!)
I am, like yourself, using all my original "non-modern" apps and have also found, that in the majority of instances, if there is an App that takes your fancy, you can usually find something very similar, or even the same, in the older Win 7 programs.

I don't use the metro Ui too as a matter of choice. But in Andrea's case, she has no choice but to stick with desktop because her netbook isn't capable of running the metro. Good for her she isn't very much interested with it.

Hi BigBearJedi,
I am having the same problem as most. I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 then updated to 8.1, and cannot load the store at all. I worked with MS support and found a lot of bugs, which we fixed, but still cannot load the store.
Here is my SPECCY:
Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz 55 °C
Bloomfield 45nm Technology
RAM
9.00GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 531MHz (7-7-7-19)
Motherboard
PEGATRON CORPORATION TRUCKEE (CPU 1) 49 °C
Graphics
HP w2338h (1920x1080@60Hz)
HP w2338h (1920x1080@60Hz)
1024MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 (MSI) 49 °C
Storage
698GB Seagate ST3750528AS (SATA) 30 °C
Optical Drives
ATAPI DVD A DH16AAL
ATAPI DVD D DH16D5S
Audio
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

I also ran the 8.1 upgrade assistant that only told me that I already had 8.1 loaded.
I tried the wsreset; I tried uninstalling my virus software (since reinstalled); I tried the app troubleshooter; I am ran the DISM Clean-up-Image; I tried, I tried, I tried.

The App troubleshooter keeps telling me that I might have a problem with a device or might need to update your display adapter drivers, which I did; running the Device Troubleshooter, and no issues were present.

Still won't run...

I am my wits' end. I have the disk that I used to upgrade, and tried (albeit before I killed the bugs) to repair but got errors when I entered my product key (that I used to install it and it worked fine then).

Any ideas? Have I missed a step?

Thanks! Jedi - you are my only hope!
Jane

Hi Syder:
Troublesome problem for sure. I haven't seen the DISM tool that was recommended to you above; and I ran into a similar problem today at a Windows8 workshop for beginners I worked at today at my local computer club. I had a brand new Lenovo laptop with Win8 factory install do something similar. Some Apps tiles worked such as "Explorer", "Maps", and "Finance", but the "Store" tile and "Kindle Tiles did not! I rebooted several times, then realized it could be a possible hardware problem. *I'll tell you more on that in a minute*.

My workshop student had multiple problems with this laptop and it was only 2 weeks old! While trying to solve his App problem, I discovered that his AC Adapter had failed, and wouldn't recharge his laptop battery. We disconnected the AC Adapter and run just from the battery and rebooted multiple times (before the battery discharged completely); but no luck. My point here is that he's got some hardware problems. We had like 9 other laptops and desktops running various versions of 8.0 & 8.1 and no one else had this particular problem; including at least 3 of those laptops being updated via the Internet as your was. None had this weird App problem.

My bet is that it is due to running older hardware with the newest Windows release *8.1*, and this has always been a problem with older computers running new Windows versions. It happened on Win7, Vista, XP, 2000, all the way back to Windows 1.1!

Microsoft has included the Upgrade Assistant with a link (I don't have it here with me but will look for it) to check your hardware to see if it's compatible. The old product was called Microsoft Compatibility Assistant. You may remember that one.

Since the quick repairs didn't work, I'm suggesting this could be your issue. Would you please download SPECCY, and post the results here for us to look at? If you can, Google the "UPGRADE ASSISTANT" and run that report and also post here, if you can.

If this presents to much work for you, I completely understand. If you do Post, it might help us pinpoint your problem and support my Postulation that it's a hardware compatability issue.

Your alternative would be to completely backup your critical data from the system you are on now, and reinstall from Factory Recovery Discs that came with your computer in the box. If you don't have the Recovery Discs and you have a name brand PC such as Dell, HP, Gateway, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony they usually have a Utility to produce those discs onto DVD or Flash drive for Recovery purposes. Additionally, modern PC's running Win7 or better such as yours also have that Recovery software stored on a hidden partition on your internal hard drive you can access via the F8 or F5 key through Windows Recovery Console. If you don't have the discs, or your PC doesn't have a DVD burner and you can't produce them, you can restore your system to what we call "OOB Condition" or "Out-Of-Box Condition", or the conditon your computer was in when you took it out of the sealed factory box. *of course this assumes that you purchased your Win7 computer brand new*.

I would try a rebuild to Factory Win7 and then re-apply the update from links that Mike Fara provides on this sub-forum sticky at: http://windowsforum.com/threads/windows-8-1-rtm-now-available-for-download.176800/

If this still doesn't work you should consider taking your PC into a competent repair Shop that employes licensed Technicians to sovle it.

Looking forward to your Posts and or results.
