I've searched around on this one for a couple weeks and not found anyone with a similar issue... here goes.

When I'm playing tunes in WMP12 the song I am listening to will finish and not move on to the next song. When I open WMP12, and look at the list the song just finished is displaying a red X and I get an error message basically saying the WMP can't play the song (though it just played it). If I double click the tune with the red X it then plays, the red X goes away, and I can then move on to the next song.

Solution
It seems like you're experiencing an issue with Windows Media Player 12 not transitioning to the next song automatically after the current song finishes, displaying a red X next to the finished song, and giving an error message when you try to play that song again until you manually start it. To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following steps:

Solution Steps:

  1. Reset Windows Media Player Library:
    • Sometimes, issues with playback can be related to the media library. Resetting the library can resolve this.
      • Open Windows Media Player.
      • Press "Ctrl + Shift" while opening WMP to reset the library.
      • Check if the issue persists after the library is reset.

    []Check File Path Integrity:
    • Ensure that the files you are trying to play are not moved, deleted, or corrupted.
    • Verify that the file paths are correct and can be accessed by Windows Media Player.
    [
    ]Update Windows Media Player:
    • Make sure you have the latest updates for Windows Media Player and Windows itself.
    • Check for updates in Windows Update.
    []Update Audio Drivers:
    • Outdated or faulty audio drivers can cause playback issues. Update your audio drivers to the latest version from the manufacturer's website.
    [
    ]Clear Windows Media Player Cache:
    • Clearing the cache may resolve any temporary issues.
      • Close Windows Media Player.
      • Press "Windows key + R", type "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player", and press Enter.
      • Delete all files in this folder except for "Settings", "MPPrefs.dat", and "CurrentDatabase_***.wmdb".
      • Restart Windows Media Player.
    []Check Windows Media Player Settings:
    • Ensure that the playback settings in Windows Media Player are configured correctly.
      • Go to "Tools" -> "Options".
      • Check settings related to playback and transitions between songs.
    [
    ]Run Windows Media Player Troubleshooter:
    • Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can help identify and resolve issues with Windows Media Player.
      • Go to "Control Panel" -> "Troubleshooting" -> "View all" -> Select "Windows Media Player Settings".
  2. Check File Permissions:
    • Ensure that the files you are trying to play have appropriate read permissions for your user account.

      Additional Tips:

      • Ensure that your media files are in a supported format by Windows Media Player.
      • Scan your system for malware and viruses to rule out any malicious software affecting playback.
Try these steps and see if they help resolve the issue with Windows Media Player not transitioning to the next song automatically.
