I want to remove a picture selection from the 'Choose a new picture for your account' window which is not a 'default picture' but was added from a user. I cannot find where the added picture is located so I can remove it. It is not in the user account pictures/default pictures directory, nor is it located in the user's picture directory where it originally was since I have erased it.

I think they are stored in a .dat file at...
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures
I don't have any idea how you could modify the .dat file to remove the unwanted picture.
There is a copy of it at...
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\username.bmp
But I don't know if deleting this will remove it from the selection screen. I don't think it will but it's worth a shot.

I edited the address and now it's putting a space after the m in bmp!
Before I edited it the space was in a different location thought maybe in the same location in the line.

If you go to the User area to change the picture, on the bottom it has a "Browse for more Pictures" option. Click on that and then on the resulting screen, see if the picture is there. If it is, the Pictures Library shows the locations of the pictures, or at least what folder they are in. This info might help to narrow down where the picture is.
Or you could try just searching for *.jpg or other image types. A search for my picture shows only one occurrence in My Pictures folder. But there may be another copy using a different name.

I have erased the 'original' picture. When I go to browse for other images it just doesn't show the picture at all... but it is still on the original page. I suspect there is a file it has been imported into but just don't know what that file is. I have also searched for the picture and haven't found it.

When I used Browse for more pictures my selected picture (the one I was using) disappeared and the new one I selected replaced it both as my default picture and on the selection page.
As far as I can see there is no sign of it now.
I had to go back to my original and import it again.
It then replace the one I had used to replace it on the selection page.

As always... sometimes the answer is right there in front of one... just the right combination of keystrokes. <grin> I simply changed pictures to another default picture and the system apparently rescanned and corrected for the missing picture, i.e. it erased it. Just browsing didn't do the job but selecting another picture and changing the picture did do it. Now I only have pictures that still exist on the drive. I went back in and selected the picture that I had browsed for my own icon and I'm good to go. Thank you very much!
