I have Windows 7 Professional x86, and for the last couple days, when I shutdown it says it's installing update 1 of 1. However, after a minute or two, the hard drive activity stops and it just sits there for hours, doing nothing until I manually turn off the system. Is anybody else having this problem?

Solution
You could try and hide it, if it is showing as pending/waiting.
Open Windows Update
Do one of the following:
  1. Click the link that tells you important updates are available if you have important updates to hide.
  2. Click the link that tells you optional updates are available if you have optional updates to hide.<LI class=step>Select any update that you want to hide, right-click it, and then click Hide update. Do this for each update you want to hide.
  3. Click OK.

What does it say in your Windows update history? You should have 9 Windows updates, and maybe other types. One may say fail or waiting or something.

Yup, nine updates and some other ones. Nothing recent is listed as having failed. The exclamation point is once again sitting there next to the shutdown button... *sigh*
