Hello world,

I just got myself a brand new laptop (HP dv9500). A wonderfull machine with VISTA on it but ...

...there is a "small" problem. After startup and logon the computer shows a black screen with only a cursor in the middle of it. The black screen stays there for a few minutes. Then the computer starts up normally.
I've seen a lot of comments on the net about this problem but I didn't found not realy an answer.

2 solutions:
- I'm waiting several minutes and everything becomes ok and after the "late" startup the computer works realy perfectly.
- Ctrl-Alt-Del and I restart the user-session and it becomes also OK.

Now, I think that's not a normal way to startup the computer, I'm even verry shure of it.

My questions:
Does anybody on this wonderfull world had a similar problem?
Is there a solution?
Any idea how to resolve this problem?
Where do I start?

Hello! It seems like you're encountering a common issue with your HP dv9500 laptop running Windows Vista, where after startup and login, you are greeted with a black screen with just a cursor, which persists for a few minutes before the system eventually starts up normally. This problem can be frustrating, but there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to address it. Here are some potential solutions and steps to resolve this issue: 1. Update Graphics Drivers: - Outdated or corrupt graphics drivers can cause display issues. Try updating your graphics drivers to the latest version compatible with Windows Vista. 2. Perform System Restore: - If this issue started recently, you can try performing a system restore to a point before the problem began. This can help revert any recent changes that might have caused the black screen issue. 3. Check for Malware: - Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to check for any malware or viruses that could be causing the problem. 4. Disable Startup Programs: - Some startup programs can conflict with the system and cause startup issues. Try disabling unnecessary startup programs using the System Configuration utility (msconfig). 5. Check Event Viewer: - Check the Windows Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings that might provide insight into what is causing the black screen issue. 6. Run System File Checker: - Run the System File Checker tool to scan for and repair corrupted system files that could be causing the problem. 7. Safe Mode Startup: - Try starting your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If it doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it could indicate a software conflict. 8. Hardware Diagnostics: - Perform hardware diagnostics to check for any hardware issues that might be causing the problem. To get started with troubleshooting, you can begin with updating your graphics drivers and checking for malware. If the issue persists, you can proceed with the other steps mentioned above. Feel free to try these suggestions, and let me know if you need further assistance or if any of these steps help resolve the issue!
