Windows XP Boot problems with SP3

Recently I installed (from a CD) Windows XP Professional on my computer.

The installation went well. When I looked at "About Windows", the box said
that Service Pack 1 was already present.

Then I proceeded to install Service Packs 2 and 3. Number two installed
OK, but Service Pack 3 gave problems.

It seemed to go OK, but when the thing was done and the machine rebooted,
it abruptly stopped with a message about
"Missing or corrupt file: NTOSKRNL.EXE"
and that was as far as I got.

What is being pointed at here, and what can I do to fix it?

Is there a number at Microsoft that can do an online activation of Windows
XP? If so, what is it? The number given in the instructions seems to be out of service.

Lastly, is there a program that can be put on a floppy disk or USB stick, that can boot
the machine (a Gateway Pentium 3 type) and give something like a COMMAND.COM
that can work with the files and directories even when Windows will not boot?

Thanks.

XP has been end of life for many years and it's unlikely you'll be able to activate it through normal means. I really hope you don't have that system connected to the internet. If you do you're asking for a compromised system.

It seems they set the activation server for xp offline, because xp won't be supported anymore. So I think the same could happen to Win 7 activation server in the near future. So act according to the slogan "never change a running system" ^^
