Windows 7 BSOD ever since I have this computer

Hi, I have had this computer for quite some time, probably a year and a half to two. I started having BSOD after several months, but it was rather rare. I noticed it happened a little more frequent about half a year ago, where I played more flash games on facebook. My computer randomly reboots more frequently than BSOD then. Eventually I have a defective hard disk, and I replaced it; I was guessing it took too much of this random reboot thing.

Thereafter, the problem still persisted, but it didn't irritate me enough to want to spend maybe half a day rectifying it. However, I started playing games on my computer (not flash games, but those full screen MMRPG), and it started to happen more frequently. This time it irritated me enough when it sometimes rebooted/BSODed every hour. Having said that, sometimes I could play the whole day (like 16 hour) without rebooting/BSODing even once.

After that I tried changing PSU, and also updated display driver. Not sure if I'm having illusions, but I think it became worse after updating display driver. These are the minidumps, hopefully someone can save my computer.

Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility.

Your latest dump file lists ntkrnlmp.exe as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes. Random stop codes can often indicate hardware issues.


As a Priority:

AVG is known to be a cause of BSOD's on Windows 7 systems. Suggest that you uninstall it. Download the correct AVG Remover for your system (32 or 64 bit).
If you have AVG ID protection installed, download the AVGID Protection Remover from the above link as well (it wouldn't hurt to download and run it anyway). Download BSOD friendly Link Removed due to 404 Error as AVG's replacement.
Uninstall AVG through the Control Panel. Re-boot to Safe Mode and run the AVG Removal tool(s). Re-boot to normal mode and install MSE. Make sure your Windows firewall is enabled!

Thanks, I will work on the recommended steps. However, I forgot to add that my computer may have more than one problem. The dump files from earlier dates probably have different error codes. I know it because the length of text in BSOD is different earlier on. Also, I only encounter this problem when I'm using flash content (flash games) or playing full screen games. That was why I suspected my PSU/VGA first, as my old PSU was 450W and VGA requires 400W (if PSU didn't give constant 450W my computer would die off). IN other words, I don't recall having any random reboot/BSOD problem while I'm normal surfing web or doing anything else.

Just remembered something, Sometimes my game freezes (background music is still present but graphically the game freezes), and it recovers after 10-15 seconds. Sometimes, the game simply crashes and occasionally I can see a message that the display driver crashed. Not sure if it has anything to do with this problem. (I have updated my display driver)

Hi Lim Jy.

I understand you mentioning previous issues you may think you have. I/We have to do a bit of second guessing, the best way is with the "now" dump files.

Can you attach your latest dump file please. Then go back to your minidump folder and delete them all. They'll be here and at least you know you are posting the latest ones.

Can you:

Download and run CPU-Z. Take screenshots**/snips of the Mainboard tab, Memory tab and all the slot #'s under the SPD tab.
Go to Post Reply, click on the Go Advanced button and attach the screenshots**/snips to your post for all the RAM experts to see by using the paper clip you will find on the top toolbar. Do not zip them up.
**If screenshots, please crop.

Then

Download and run the SF Diagnostics Tool. When the reports have been created, zip them up and attach to a post.​

Make sure to right click the .exe file and run as Administrator.

STOP 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
Usual causes: Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Overclocking failure, Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack.

Your latest dump file lists atikmdag.sys, as you know, as the probable cause.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes. Random stop codes can often indicate hardware issues.


As a Priority:

As your graphics are being blamed I'd do a total clean up of them and then re-install again.

• Download and install Driver Sweeper.
• Uninstall your current Graphics setup through Programs and Features
• Boot to and run (preferably) Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode to clean up the remnants of your current Graphics set up.
• Reboot to Normal Mode.
• Install your new Graphics set up.

AMD Graphics Drivers

There have also been several updates to your BIOS (double check I've got your right Mobo!!) ASUSTeK.

If you are overclocking ANYTHING then set back to defaults until the bsods are resolved.

Can you then run Memtest 86+ to make sure you have no memory issues.
Run Memtest86+ overnight, after your computer has been off for about an hour or two so it has a cold start. Ideally let it run for at least 7 passes / 6-8 hours. If errors appear before that you can stop that particular test.
Note!! Any time Memtest86+ reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad Mobo slot. Test RAM sticks individually. When you find a good one then test it in all slots. Post back with the results.

Thanks for the reply. I proceeded with updating BIOS version first as I am not sure which Driver Sweeper you are referring to. I googled for it and there is one from Guru3D and one from Phyxion. Well, they should perform the job but I just want to be sure which one to use.

I chose to update BIOS partly because I see quite a numerous improvement, especially one related to DRAM voltages.

I have updated BIOS, that didn't help at all. Then I ran memtest for 8 hours, 9 complete tests, found no errors. I just uninstalled my display driver and reinstalled it yesterday, seems a little more stable, but I still had a random reboot after about 6-7 hours. I will continue to monitor, and perhaps this time it's caused by yet another problem.

Just when I thought things changed for the better, it got BSODs and random reboots again. 4 BSODs captured in 2 days, and very different errors. It also probably had the same amount of random reboots, if not more. I also noticed one of the reboots was different, it seemed to fully power down (instant power down) for about 3 seconds before rebooting up again. (Usual reboot simply reboots with CPU indicating lights still lighted)

I almost wanted to reformat my whole computer and reinstall windows and stuff. These are the recent dump files.

It should, I believe, be in the Programs and Features through Control Panel. If it isn't you could do a search for it and if that comes up blank then GoTo the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder and rename the AsIO.sys driver AsIO.bak. This will break it and prevent it from loading.
