Windows 7 BSOD when in game COD MW2 & MW3

New Member
So I've recently built myself a pc, and since have been having issues with a BSOD while in game in MW3 from anywhere between 10 minutes and a couple of hours of game play, and once in MW2 after a little bit (forgot the time period). I originally had my OS on my 2tb HDD, and since have put in place a 64gb SSD. My OS is currently running off that, and I originally thought it had fixed the problem, but 4 days later, playing moderate amounts of MW3 (2 hours a day) I experienced another BSOD after just over an hour of game play. I've read the how to ask for help with a BSOD problem and have the attachments for you, although I could not get the CPU-z Program to run properly for some reason, so I have tried to put those details below as well.

Asus P8Z77-M PRO P8Z77-M PRO.Z77 4xDDR3 3xPCI-E16 GBL SATA3 USB3.0 RA
OCZ 64G Vertex 4 Series SATA III 2.5" SSD
Western Digital WD20EZRX 3.5" CAVIAR GREEN, 2TB,INTELIPOWER,64MB,SATA III,
Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) CML16GX3M2A1600C10 DDR3 1600MHz CL10 LP Vengeance Unbuffered DIMM Memory with X
Intel Core i7 3770K/3.50GHz/8MB CACHE/LGA1155 Ivy Bridge
750w Power supply with fan
Gigabyte GTX 570 1280mb

Please note that my Graphics card is not new as I bought it secondhand from a mate. He had been using it as a secondary for a couple of months, but tested it before he gave it to me. It is about 12 months old.

I am about to run MSI afterburner to see how it goes, I'll comment whether or not I get a BSOD then.

- Nothing seems to come from MSI, I'm now running AIDA cpu stress test and will test RAM next

Thanks heaps :)

Ok so it appears I accidentally Overclocked (as to how, I don't have a clue), so I've fixed that an I'll see how it goes :)

Only 103 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 150 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

C: drive only has about 10% free space. E: has about 9% Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard! I STRONGLY suggest not using controller drivers older than mid-2012 with SSD's.
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
05 Jan 2013 - very interesting post about difficulties with the Marvell controllers even when not connected to the SSD drives: https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cr...-pc-reboots-when-waking-sleep.html#post169956
27 Feb 2013 - I'm starting to see much better reliability with SSD's using current (mid-2012 and later) storage drivers. I have withdrawn my objections to using these devices in everyday systems.

You have 5 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized. This includes any automatic overclocking such as "Turbo" mode. The memory dump shows a 100 mHz overclock.

The memory dump shows a STOP 0x116 error. Please start with these troubleshooting steps: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums

Thanks very much for your help, I updated the bios but got another BSOD. When you said update motherboard controllers drivers, was that just the bios, or everything such as firmware, utilities and everything else on the ASUS website?
Also with the windows updates, the remaining ones are only language packs and internet explorer updates, were you meaning all of them?
At the time of that WF7 diagnostic tool a fair bit of my memory was taken from dump files. I ran C Cleaner, and gave myself about 9gb free on the 64 gb SSD, now since the latest BSOD (After bios update) I have those back, and re-posted with the latest diagnostic.
My power supply is a Antec HCG-750 750W High Current Gamer 80PLUS Bronze 135mmfan, and two of those Hard drives are external, and another was a 100MB partition that has since been removed.
I haven't updated my SSD Firmware yet, do you have to wipe it to do that? ( It's a brand-new SSD! )
I am currently capped in my data, but will be getting more within the coming week or so. I've tried to update as many drivers as I can find.
I will reply again in a couple of days with some more information, I have other things I'm trying to get done at the same time as trouble shoot (I hope this doesn't inconvenience you in anyway).

Thanks again,
Headless

I'm not a hardware expert, and I rarely do anything special with my hardware (I don't overclock anymore).

The 80+ PSU is a good item, so I wouldn't worry about it for now.

Storage controllers are chips soldered onto the motherboard that control the activity of the storage devices.
On your mobo you have Intel and ASMedia storage controllers - those are what needs to be updated to ensure that the SSD plays nicely with your system.

I'm uncertain of the procedure for updating the firmware on an SSD as I've never had to do it myself. My reading suggests that it will wipe out the data on the hard drive - so I'd strongly suggest backing up your data before starting.

I have since installed a brand-new version of windows 8 pro, and have started to go into a BSOD, however, instead of getting the blue screen and dumb files, my pc sits there with static through the speakers, and the first time a yellow screen, but then, absolutely nothing. I have now run windows updater and there was a few things to install that may help this, but it is still very frustrating! Is there any setting or something like that that could fix this?

I would like to point out that I didn't have the SSD from the start. I originally installed on my 2TB internal (got several BSOD), but thought the write speed or something of the sort could have been the issue (I was thinking of getting an SSD at a later stage but I decided to get it then to save yet another re-install).

Thanks again,
Headless

Windows 8 is not generating a dump file even after dumps. I know this is a windows 7 forum, but I was having BSOD's before on windows 7
I will be looking on the windows 8 forum for answers as well, but I'm asking in case someone here can help :)

I also post over in the Windows8Forums.
Let's leave the discussion here for the time being. My concern is that this could be a hardware problem - and moving to the other forum would make it more difficult to compare older crashes with newer one's.

For starters, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Please let us know the results of the tests.

Also, please run these reports (and post them here, not in the Windows8Forums): How To Ask For Help With BSOD

Have you set the system to generate minidumps? Here's my how-to: Set MiniDump

I will go ahead and run the Hardware Diagnostics.
I have the reports for you, and they will be attached
I did change the settings to generate a dump file, but it doesn't BSOD properly, it starts to (starts the same as windows 7 BSOD did) but stays with static through the headphones and now no signal to the screen.

These are the three files for diagnostics:
View attachment W7F CPU RAM.zip

I also ended up getting a crash/BSOD (Not sure what I call this now!?) while playing League of Legends, and it is appearing to occur more frequently in Windows 8.

This afternoon I pulled everything out of my case and checked for bent pins/loose cables and everything like that. I'm hoping this wouldn't change diagnostics, but I had heard that things like that could cause issues at times.

Just noting that my SSD did have only 5gb free when I first ran that information, I ran C Cleaner and it is back to having 30% free

Thanks for your attention so far, it has been much appreciated.

Please verify that you have updated the firmware on your SSD.

There's no pagefile configured on your boot drive - that's why you can't get memory dumps.
Please free up enough space on your boot drive for a pagefile and start using it. The data from the dump file will be very helpful.

Many registry errors in the event log. See my PM.

Enable the pagefile and wait for a couple of crashes, then zip up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder for us to have a look at.

I apologise as I have not yet updated my Firmware for my SSD. I will get to this as soon as I can. Would it be best to do this before I do anything else? Including hardware diagnostics? I believe it may mean I will have to do a re-install of windows.

*Edit*

Just ran intel cpu stress test and everything passed. Will shutdown and run ram test and update firmware + re-install windows.

So today I ran the intel core test you have in your hardware diagnostics, and then completed formatted, then wiped my SSD with Ccleaner, updated the firmware (It said it was up to date, but gave me the option to update anyway, I did this (on a friends pc), did a complete re-install of windows, went to windows update, got absolutely everything (visited it many times), ran the bootable memtest while i was fixing the SSD, I did only leave it for 2 passes, but will run it over night. I then installed steam to play COD, got into the game, in about two minutes of gameplay I got the crash, I left it for about a minute (I should have left it for longer but I was too frustrated), and restarted it, now I'm here.... I will run the wf7 to see if it gave me a dump file, but it didn't appear to.

Ok, so it didn't give me a dump file, but i rain the w7f tool to give you information. I'm going to look at swapping my gpu with a mates to see if that will play properly.

I did find this which is my current problem:

This is a real poser!
Did the system function well on your friend's PC?
I'm looking at 3 potential problem areas:
- CPU
- network
- motherboard

Make sure that you run these hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Also run a couple of more of the CPU tests. Also run Prime95 - and run the Small FFT's and Large FFT's tests (to test the CPU cache and the controller).

After that it's a matter of replacing the network card to see if that's the issue (if you current network card is built into the mobo you'll have to disable it in the BIOS).

Is the mobo still under warranty?

I will swap my gpu with him tomorrow and let you know. Everything except my GPU is under warranty, luckily. And the network card is built in... so that would involve disabling it in the bios, and running a game that crashes (come to think of it, I can't recall it bluescreening in single player {could mean network card? however, I am on the internet pretty frequently when not in game and don't have a problem}, I will play for a while tomorrow and see. I just got it to crash again and still no dump file. I did set the setting to get the 256kb dump file prior to both crashes, will check its still set. I will run memtest overnight - as its probably the safest thing to leave running while I'm not monitoring. I'll try to run every cpu test you have in your link.
I hope we're finally getting to this... Its been bugging me for over a month and really starting to get to me. If we can't solve it soon I'll have to take it in to where I ordered the parts from and for probably a reasonably expensive service fee, get them to diagnose it.

Network cards are cheap (around $15 US at most major retailers) and (IMO) it's a good idea to have a spare around in case yours dies.

Frankly my suspicion is with your mobo - and since it's under warranty you can start talking with them about an RMA authorization. But it's better to finish the tests before sending it off, as it's gonna involve a bit of work to install the new mobo.

FWIW - if it's under warranty, and it's a hardware problem - there shouldn't be any charge (at least that's how it works at my shop in the USA). We will even re-install Windows if we replace a hard drive under warranty.

Ok, I'll get the network card probably tomorrow. I'll have to go there tomorrow to get a hard drive for an old laptop of mine that died the day after I got this pc. And yeah, a motherboard replacement is the most annoying of them all but if it fixes it, its worth it.
I sent them an email asking about pricing and that sort of thing. The service charge may only apply if its something they believe I did in installation.

This is one of the happiest moments in this crashing so far... I got a dump file!
So far today I've run a GPU test for about 30 minutes, nothing - I am organising swapping the GPU now. Overnight I ran the memtest for 4 passes... nothing showed up. I ran the intel test again, nothing. (I am getting more stress tests to trial). I will swap the GPU, see if I get a crash, if I do I might run COD off another hard drive - I did run a quick test on my main HDD, might have to do a full one something soon.
Attached is the w7f files (WITH THE DUMP!)
I purchased a network card, but will wait until I finish these other couple of tests before I put it in.

This one blames the video. Let us know the results of swapping video cards.
If you don't get around to swapping the video card soon - then try Driver Verifier (while using the original video card) using these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Looks like I'll be having to get a new GPU, rather than keeping this other one.... The bloke I purchased it off did test it for a few days before he sold it, but anyway. I've swapped with him, played about 4 hours, and so far no response. I'm going to keep it for a couple of days and see how we go. Thanks so much for your help!
Even though I did run a couple of GPU tests, it mustn't have been enough to trigger anything.

Will re-post and let you know if this fixes everything :)
Sorry for not swapping the GPU earlier (If turns out to be certainly the issue)

We base these things on clues - there's very rarely anything that points to the fix on the very first try.
If we solve it within 2 pages of posts, that's doing good (for BSOD issues).

Good luck!
