Windows 7 BSODs of the Decade

Hey everyone

Seeing as how I'm in the BSOD forum, you won't be surprised to hear me say it, but BSODs and me, we go way back.
Ever since the first day I purchased my laptop, I've been having them (no refund and 2 exchanges for the same model at the store, they wouldn't agree to anything else).
So I decided to try and solve this problem, but I literally tried everything (and since my computer didn't come with a recovery disc, so I can't re-install windows), I am really out of options.
I tried to get help at the Toshiba forums (since my laptop is a brand new Toshiba), but no solutions there.
I tried updates, software switches, BIOS updates, nothing helped.
I really don't know what to do anymore.

My laptops' specs are:
Toshiba A500 series.
Windows 7, 64bit home Premium.
CPU Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 @ 2.53GHz
4GB Ram
VGA nVIDIA GeForce GT 230M

One thing I noticed lately (don't know if it's new), when I opened Device Manager, I see under "Memory technology driver", all components have the error sign next to them; for further details, the components are:
JMB38X MS Host Controller.
JMB38X SD Host Controller.
JMB38X SD/MMC Host Controller.
JMB38X xD Host Controller.

You may note that just today, I uninstalled McAfee (thinking that the problem was related to it as I saw in some forums) and installed Norton Antivirus 2011 instead.
I also found a new BIOS update on the Toshiba forums for my model, and I updated it, but I got 2 BSODs after, so I guess that wasn't the problem.

If you can offer ANY kind of assistance, I would really appreciate it, since I've gotten to a point where I either throw my laptop out the balcony or throw myself out (purchasing a new one is out of the question since I can't afford it).

I attached my Minidump folder as requested in the Sticky thread of this forum, I hope it helps.
Thank you in advance.View attachment DMP.zip

Those devices are Jmicron:

Late me take a look at your crash file now ...

One thing I noticed a few minutes ago: the Memory Technology Driver doesn't always show in my Device Manager.
Just now after reading your reply, I checked my Device Manager, and the entire section was missing.
I scanned for hardware changes a few times, still nothing. It won't show.

What do you make of that?

2. Also, you may want to replace your Symantec with Microsoft Security Essentials as they are more stable.

This should fix it. If not, attach your fresh crash dumps.

thank you for the quick reply.
Any particular order I should install them in?
Plus, what should I do abt the JMicron drivers? They're not showing on my device manager at the moment.

First of all update JMicron Card Reader, as many your recent crashes were caused by that. Check for it in Control Panel -> Programs and Components -> Uninstall the current version -> Reboot -> Install the new one from the support site.

Then update Realtek and Intel. Don't forget about Daemon Tools. If you get more crashes after those updates, replace symantec with MSE.

Report if more crashes (attach the fresh dmp's then).

I updated the JMicron drivers, need to restart for them to take effect (they're showing in my device manager again).
For the other 3, sorry to sound like such a rookie, but how can I know which files to download exactly?
I don't know what to look for in the 3 websites, if you could point me in the right direction, would be greatly appreciative (restarting computer now).
I'll keep you posted as to what's happening.
Thank you for everything so far.

You said something about Daemon tools. I don't have it installed. I uninstalled it ages ago.

This is most often Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%, both these products use sptd.sys by Duplex Software.

Thank you again for a superquick reply, you're doing more for me that anyone has in the past year.
But I don't have Daemon Tools or Alcohol installed, could it be that I need to clean some files that were left on my computeR?

When I went to the Intel link, I clicked detect, it came up with:
Graphics Driver
Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board
Wireless Networking
Wired Networking (Newer Driver Available)

When I expanded "Wired Networking", it gave me the Realtek update. Could it be that by visiting the Intel website, both updates got taken care of?

And what do I do about the disappearing Jmicron drivers? (they're not showing in device manager).
Again, thank you very much.

You should uninstall sptd.sys then:

DuplexSecure - FAQ

If your system has some problems with SPTD installation you can do as follows:

If your system is already running then go to step 2 directly. Otherwise start from step 1.

Step 1. Boot in safe mode and press ESC key when you see on bottom line of display:

"Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys". This will abort loading of SPTD layer.

Step 2.
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\ Services\sptd" registry key in REGEDIT and set DWORD Start value to 4 (i.e. disabled).

Step 3.
Reboot again in normal mode and check if your issue is solved. To reenable SPTD restore the DWORD Start value back to '0' and reboot your computer.

I don't know why your JMicron Devices desappear, they shouldn't. Uninstall Symantec and install MSE. Scan your system for malware.

All right, thank you for the rest.
I'm gonna try removing the SPTD.sys as you said.

Will be getting a malware as well.
I will keep you posted with what happens.

sptd.sys is really Daemon Tools in 99% of the cases. It could also be a part of some other CD/DVD utility like CD Media World. The best way to uninstall/update this sptd.sys is with the software it came with. If you are still confused, just leave this driver and let's see how it goes.

Intel Storage Drivers - you should know your system better. If you're not sure, leave this one as it is and again let's see how it goes, if any bsod's follow.

But you do need to update JMicron card reader, your .dmp's identify it as the one that caused the crashes.

I successfully deleted the sptd.sys
Am currently scanning my PC for malware using Malwarebytes, came up clean.

I did update the JMicron card reader drivers (successfully). But they don't show in device manager anymore. I think they show every time I start the computer, but then they disappear.

As for the Intel Storage Drivers, when I followed the Intel link you gave me, I scanned, and only came up with the Realtek update (which I did).
What do I do now?

Now let's see if your system is in working order now, if you get new bsod's attach the crash dumps.

Cybercore, excellent job. You're getting really good at this. :)

Quick suggestion...whenever there is sptd.sys, it really should be removed as opposed to updated. It was notorious years ago, is notorious now and many years into the future, it will still be notorious. lol

Again, excellent work!

Updates: I have seen a huge performance difference in my laptop (positive difference).
The startup is faster, the apps run smoother, and of course, no BSOD !!!!

I can't thank you enough.

Not yet, so far it's smoothly going less than a day only, let's watch it over the next few days and then hopefully it's fixed.

Thanks! : )

You're right about sptd.sys, and I have too witnessed it cause BSOD's while reading many crash dumps here with you. When we say to update drivers, of course by that we mean uninstall the current first, reboot, and only then install new. Same as update video drivers, should uninstall it first - not over.

I use Alcohol 120%, and mine is C:\Windows\system32\drivers\sptd.sys 26.06.2009, and I can't reckon having any BSOD's ever. All the rest drivers are up to date though.
