Windows 7 Cannot Open .doc Attachments in Windows Live Email

My Windows Live Email in Windows 7 RC 7100 has been working fine, but in the past week I have been unable to open "word.doc" attachments even though the .doc extension is associated with Winword.

I have been saving the attachment to my Desktop to be able to read it and then decide if I want to really keep it and then move it to a suitable folder etc.

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

If you are saving some where else, I don't see the coonection. But have you looked in the Tools - Safety Options - Security. Maybe you have attachments locked there.

I would much prefer to be able attachments from within the received email instead of saving the attachment and then opening it and having to delete both the email and attachment plus the saved attachment.

I keep getting this error message when opening a .doc attachment ......

Link Removed due to 404 Error

I have been through the settings in Tools > Options & Safety Options but nothing makes any difference.
As I said this problem has only started recently and is giving me the schits.

Looks like you have lost you associate for.doc. What do you get offered if you right click and "open with"

I get:

Open
Print
Save As
Save All

and Add & Remove are greyed out, nothing else with the right click.

Ok. Open "Default Programs" in the Control panel. The "Set associates"
Scroll down to .doc. You should have written there, somthing like Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 Document. If not, I believe it may be because you have recently installed Office 2007 or 2010 with the defaults. If so, open word. and then options. Scroll to and click save. Over on the right select "Save files in this format" and select "Word 97..etc" Ok it and exit and now try the .docs.

Been through all of your above directions RAK, no difference.

I have repaired Windows Live Mail - MS Office 2003 & re-installed "MS Office 2007 to 2003 File Format Converters" in case the file was a .docx, still no difference to the attachment, I cannot open it from within the email.

Hi Peter.
Are you getting any message when you try to open the.docs?

Yep!

See my 2nd post in this thread and click on the thumbnail to enlarge it.
As I said, I have reset the association with Winword all to no avail.

Sorry, missed that. I am out of sound ideas. I can only say 1. Possibly, but unlikely, corrupt files or 2. Download OO and see if it will open them.

You reckon you are stumped, how do you think I feel? :)

I have even uninstalled all updates back to 10/2009 and it's still not opening the .doc file, I think I'll switch to back Thunderbird and Window Live Mail can go take a running jump at itself. :-0
