Hi,

I just built a new computer today and istalled windows 7 , hooked it up to my 24 inch monitor and was suprised to see a good portion of the native resolution not showing up leaving me seeing only a portion of the desktop ( no start bar or icons, just the clock and cpu meter in side bar ) I tried changing resolution a few times, a couple times the screen went blank ( blue ) and after a few seconds fixed itself, and then one time it didnt fix itself.

I went on to my laptop and realized there is a issue with windows 7 and native 1920x 1080 resolutions... so I booted my new computer into safe mode to change the resolution so I can get out of blank screen.. but I cant change resolution in safe mode, so how do I change the resolution so that when I boot it I dont get a blank screen . I could just reformat but there should be a simpler way...

thanks a ton

It seems like you're experiencing display resolution issues with Windows 7 on your newly built computer when connected to a 24-inch monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080. This issue can be frustrating, but there are steps you can take to address it without resorting to a reformat. Here's a step-by-step guide to changing the resolution on Windows 7 to avoid the blank screen upon booting:
  1. Boot into Safe Mode Without Networking:
    • Restart your computer and press the F8 key repeatedly before the Windows logo appears to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
    • Select "Safe Mode" and hit Enter. This will boot Windows into Safe Mode, but you won't be able to change the resolution in Safe Mode directly.

    []Access the Registry Editor:
    • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type "regedit" and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
    [
]Navigate to the Display Settings Registry Key:
    • In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
      Code:
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video
    • Under this key, you will find subkeys with long random names. Open each one until you find the one with settings for your monitor.
    []Modify the Display Settings:
    • Look for entries like "DefaultSettings.XResolution" and "DefaultSettings.YResolution" within the subkey related to your monitor.
    • Double-click these entries and change their values to match the native resolution of your monitor (1920 for XResolution and 1080 for YResolution).
    [
    ]Reboot Your Computer:
    • After changing the registry settings, close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
    • Windows should now boot with the correct resolution settings for your monitor. By following these steps, you should be able to set the correct display resolution for your monitor in Windows 7 without encountering the blank screen issue upon booting. Make sure to be cautious when editing the registry and follow the steps accurately. Let me know if you encounter any issues during the process!
