Windows 7 Desktop disappears after sleep/screensaver

Hello,

I recently bought a new HP Pavilion desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium factory installed and installed some of my old games on it. Well, for the past week or two I've had this rather annoying problem where I leave my computer on for an hour or so, come back, wake the computer up only to find that all my desktop icons and toolbars are gone, leaving my desktop background completely bare. Another thing that I find strange is that bringing up the task manager makes the screen turn black.

So far I haven't found anything of any help over the internet regarding this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try using "System Restore" to a point before you installed your games and see if you still have the issue.

I was hoping for a solution that didn't involve a system restore. Is there any way I could get a clarification as to what the exact nature/cause of the problem is?

the thing is I've had the problem even before I performed my last system restore a week and a half ago. All I want is a solution, not trial-and-error.
