Windows 7 First BSOD in my laptop

Hello guys,

This is my first thread (and/or post), and I have to say that it is kinda sad to meet you all in this unfortunate situation. But, when I looked for info about this problem, I found that this forum is the place to go.

So, into the problem: I got a BSOD (the first one, that’s why I’m paranoiac) in my laptop. It’s a HP Pavilion dv6 3088la, everything stock (that’s why I don’t attach the CPU-Z memory tabs’ images). The blue screen occurred when Windows was shutting down, and also the system options were configured to auto reboot after the error, so I didn’t watched the details on the BS. When it restarted, the solution finder (if that’s the term in English) window came up, and I saw that the error was related to the kernel power, like the following event details show:
- System
- Provider
[ Name] Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
[ Guid] {331C3B3A-2005-44C2-AC5E-77220C37D6B4}
EventID 41
Version 2
Level 1
Task 63
Opcode 0
Keywords 0x8000000000000002
- EventData
BugcheckCode 59
BugcheckParameter1 0xc0000005
BugcheckParameter2 0xfffff88001865f69
BugcheckParameter3 0xfffff88002d2fd30
BugcheckParameter4 0x0
SleepInProgress false
PowerButtonTimestamp 0

In the event’s general tab, it says that the system restarted without a clean shut down; but that’s kinda weird, cause I was trying to shut down my computer “the right way”. After the error, I restarted my laptop 3 times, and shut it down and then back on 1 time, without troubles.

I’ve only installed one hardware component recently: an usb keyboard (sidewinder x4). But, if its drivers are the cause for the problem, I must say that those are some crappy drivers (if not, sorry Microsoft).

So, I attach the .dmp file for anyone willing to help me with this error. I want to know the cause, if it’s a serious one, and what measures need to be taken. Thank you in advance for your support and greetings from México.

Solution
Well basically, you've got a clean set up. But you had/have Norton. That's the only outside influence really. Obviously Windows won't release a system with its own drivers that will kill it. But Norton is known to cause problems, that's just down to following blue screen posts the last couple of years, you end up tending to know which are the nasties that need to be removed.

Hi glock18 and Welcome to The Forum.

STOP: 0x0000003B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
Usual causes:
System service, Device driver, graphics driver, ?memory

Norton is known to be a cause of BSOD's on Windows 7 systems. I suggest that you uninstall Norton using the Link Removed in Safe Mode. Download Blue Screen friendly Link Removed due to 404 Error as its replacement. Make sure Windows firewall is enabled!

I've got to nip out now. If nobody beats me to it I'll have a more detailed look at your dump file when I get back.

Thank you for your reply Elmer.

That sounds like a very probable cause. I installed Norton 360, which by now is on v5.1.0.29. Well, it came pre-installed for a trial period, and then (to my misfortune), I decided to buy the subscription for a year. I’ve had some other issues with the way “it gets the things done”, that whole –I’ll protect you by prohibiting a lot of things- philosophy got in my nerves more than once. Luckily, the subscription is about to end, and I can finally move away from it.

I’ll be on the look for your analysis of the dmp file, which (I think, not really sure what information it contains) should point to the specific cause (driver, process, etc.).
Thanks again for your immediate reply, and till later.

Nope, good news.

Apart from Norton you're clean! Cannot see any horror stories in there.

Phew, good to hear that.
But, just to understand more about this topic, in the dmp file, is the Norton process shown as the offender? Or it only shows a series of hexadecimal strings? Or is it a photo of Norton kicking windows in the balls? (lol)
That’s the main reason why I asked for help immediately, instead of downloading the win SDK, and then going to the utilities, and open the dmp for debugging, just to find that I don’t understand anything about it.
Reply to this post if you have the time, if not, we can close this thread for good and give Norton a farewell. I really appreciate your support, and, in the unfortunate event of a new BSOD, now I know where to search for help.

Basically any drivers not by Microsoft that pre-date 13 July 2009 can be considered non compliant to Windows 7 (note!! I said generally).

So, to that end: Your graphics drivers are old but not out of date.

  • Download and install Driver Sweeper.
  • Uninstall your current Graphics setup through Programs and Features
  • Boot to Safe Mode
  • Run Driver Sweeper to clean up the remnants of your current Graphics set up.
  • Reboot to Normal Mode.
  • Install your new Graphics set up.

And stick around. Fresh blood always welcome! :)

Roger that. Thanks for the detailed explanation, and I’ll be around to learn something from the masters.
Cheers :p

Is that an indication of some obsolete software? Or is it something to worry about?
Those Cyberlink programs never caught my attention; I just found, like a week ago, that I had PowerDirector 8 pre-installed.

I just run all those programs, but no one seemed to have any intentions to update. I’m gonna investigate some more about that ancient driver. Thank you for the observation.

It's not something to particulaly worry about but if you can update it, all the better. And if you're not going to use it then even better to uninstall.
