There are many different standards associated with HDMI cable, and you can research those. It does say a Category 1 cable may only support 1080i where a Category 2 cable will support 1080p. If you have an older cable, you might want to step up to a newer one.

But in my experience, the HDMI connection will not give the same definition as a DVI connection. Whether yours is suffering from an older cable or just the connection, I cannot tell. I am not sure the pin number is relevant since most have 19 pins. When you look for HDMI cable, the Bandwidth is important, especially if you are trying to use it with a Blue-Ray DVD player. Go back to New Egg and check the specifications on the different cables they offer.
