Windows 7 HELP! dvd-rom drive failure

I installed Windows 7 on my PC and now my DVD-ROM drive doesnt work. It shows up in My Computer, device manager says it's working properly, everything seems normal until I put in a disk, then it locks up My Computer and it's impossible to access any files from it. Every time you try to open it, it locks up. I just used this drive to install Windows 7 and it worked fine. I have an external USB drive that works fine when I plug it in. What's the deal?
