It sounds like your Compaq Presario SR5490AN is experiencing a sudden restart or shutdown after a few hours of use, especially when left idle on the desktop. This could be due to several reasons, and I can provide you with some troubleshooting steps to identify and potentially fix the issue:

Possible Causes and Solutions:

  1. Overheating:
    • Cause: Continuous operation leading to overheating.
    • Solution: Check if the system is well-ventilated and clean from dust. Use software tools to monitor temperature.
    []Hardware Issues:

    • Solution: Run hardware diagnostics to identify any failing components.

    []Hardware Issues:

    [
    ]Software or Driver Conflict:
    • Cause: Driver issues or software conflicts.
    • Solution: Update drivers and software to the latest versions. Check for conflicts in the Event Viewer.
    []Power Settings:
    • Cause: Sleep or power-saving settings causing the issue.
    • Solution: Adjust power settings to prevent the system from sleeping unexpectedly.
    [
    ]Malware or Virus:
    • Cause: Malware causing system instability.
    • Solution: Perform a full system scan using an updated antivirus program.
    []Windows Updates:
    • Cause: Pending Windows updates causing instability.
    • Solution: Ensure your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates.

      Steps to Troubleshoot:

    [
    ]Check System Temperature:
    • Monitor the system temperature using software like HWMonitor or SpeedFan. High temperatures can lead to system instability.
    []Update Drivers:
    • Update your drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, to the latest versions.
    [
    ]Check Event Viewer:
    • Check the Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings that might give clues about the sudden restart.
    []Disable Sleep Mode:
    • Disable automatic sleep mode in power settings to see if the issue persists.
    [
    ]Scan for Malware:
    • Perform a full system scan for malware using Windows Defender or a third-party antivirus program.
  2. Run Windows Updates:
    • Ensure your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates.

      Additional Information:

    • You mentioned it happens quicker when the PC is left on the desktop. This could indicate a power-saving feature or a software conflict that arises during idle times. Try these steps and observe if any specific patterns or errors occur before the sudden restart. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you have any other details to share about the issue.
